"Original" Star Wars coming to DVD

It looks like George Lucas may have given in after all.....

Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.
In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

Even though George Lucas adamantly declared 2004's digitally restored Star Wars Trilogy DVDs the definitive versions of his movies, fans have held out hope for DVDs of the originals.

Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as Episode IV: A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions (now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy).

But how much longer after that until another version arrives (HD-DVD &/or Blu-Ray)?

Re: "Original" Star Wars coming to DVD

Lucas has finally realised how stupid it is to turn people away if they're throwing their money at you then ...

Must admit, I'm almost tempted to buy the set. I don't own any of the six Star Wars films, but I might be persuaded to part with my cash for copies of the unadulterated originals.

Re: "Original" Star Wars coming to DVD

At last, however I don't see the point in putting the special edits on the DVDs as well as nearly everyone owns them already.

I even have the '91 Laserdisc set of the original film edits, and that set was actually called 'The Definitive Edition', lol.

Not everyone I am waiting for the six film box set

Probably as a justification for doubling the price.

Re: "Original" Star Wars coming to DVD

LOL I didn't see this post. I just scanned the page quickly and couldn't see it. 3 days too late, that's why. [note to self - next time use the search facility]

Anyway. Good news I ricken. I wonder how 'raw' they will be though. Are they going to be just cleaned up and restored (or maybe not even that) versions of the reels shown on opening day across America (that's what I want) or are they going to be the highly polished versions just without any CGI and other 'tweaks' such as "Greedo shooting first". My money is on the latter. Why do I think that? Just think that's the kind of wa*ky think George Lucas would do.

They are going to be the way they were shown when first released. So Han shooting first, the Opening intro will Have Starwars and not Episode 4 or A new hope. Jedi will have the original ending Ewok musical number.

It does actually mention this in the original post on starwars.com.

Actually, bearing in mind the fact that the fans have been clamouring for this for about 15 years, I think it shows that, for the first time in a long time, George is actually doing something that the fans want (although I have to accept that Jam Jar Stinks was only a minor annoyance in Revenge of the Sith).

Re: "Original" Star Wars coming to DVD

Will it be another 15 years before someone who can actually follow continuity and make good movies, re-make ep1,2,3?
