slow wireless speeds

i have just setup wireless (DLInk DI 524) and got it working fine.

(The Computer Provisioning Logon still appears when i go to my home page (BBC News) in firefox - its OK when in IE. I assume i reboot will sort it.)

I am currently downloading from an FTP server that usually gets about 90k. I am downloading now ranging from 15k to 35k.

I have set up the wireless with mac filtering, WEP-PSK, not broadcasting SSID, ......

Is there a reason will its slow. I have nothing else runnig apart from IE and firefox.

Any ideas?

---------- Post added at 15:05 ---------- Previous post was at 14:54 ----------

it looks like it may be the FTP server

i have just run the speed test:

1st 512K took 4266 ms = 120 KB/sec, approx 989 Kbps, 0.97 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4390 ms = 116.6 KB/sec, approx 961 Kbps, 0.94 Mbps
3rd 512K took 5688 ms = 90 KB/sec, approx 742 Kbps, 0.72 Mbps
4th 512K took 4328 ms = 118.3 KB/sec, approx 975 Kbps, 0.95 Mbps

i have 1 Mb broadband so that seems fine

Overall Average Speed = approx 917 Kbps, 0.9 Mbps

Re: slow wireless speeds

With that speed test it probably is just the FTP right now.

Re: slow wireless speeds

the download from the ftp is not very consistant and does range a lot - the speed graph is up and down unlike when wired its pretty consistant

one very strange thing just happened was the download which to average 90k for about 20 seconds (maxing at 140k) but now its back down ranging from 15k ish to 45k ish.

i have checked the logs and the active sessions seem normal and the only wireless client is listed as me

strange ...

Re: slow wireless speeds

Ah, sounds like a bit of interference on that wireless channel if you ask me.
You could try changing the wireless channel, it's usually set at 11. but change it to another channel and see which ones are better (if any)

Re: slow wireless speeds

i have left it at the default what it was when first set it up - channel 6

i used netstumbler to check other wireless hotspots and most are 11. only one other is 6. i will try some other channel and see how it goes

i have just checked in netstumber at the noise. its at about 30dB. most of the other wifi hotspots are more like 80db. does this kindoff confirm interferance??

why when doing the speed test (from this site) is the download speed ok? (90k).

thanks

To me it just sounds as if its gongestion somewhere, not sure where. But your channels really shouldn't clash with anyone elses, so 6 should be out of the picture along with 11.

Re: slow wireless speeds

it could be the noise - i have it placed on top of the STB and below the TV

on netstumbler the graph is quite 'high' - what confuses me though is the scale on the left hand side goes higher the lower down the y-axis. if you know what i mean!

i have changed the channel to 1
i have also set up port forwarding for FTP

still only getting slow speeds

---------- Post added at 21:00 ---------- Previous post was at 19:14 ----------

i have done some checks and its only FTP which is slow

i have just download some movie trailer and it downloaded at around 90k

Re: slow wireless speeds

the ftp i am downloading from is not port 21 but port 7272

is there any sort of port forwarding i need to do which in some way will improve the download speed?

(another server i download from is port 21212 and this is also abit slow)

tested again on an ftp server on normal port 21 and thats fine

There is more than likely port forwarding on your router which you coukd set up, probably would help performance. However, it may already have uPnP enabled and so wouldn't make much of a difference.

Re: slow wireless speeds

how do i enable port forwarding for ports 7272 and 21212

is it firewall, filter, virtual server or application

i tried to access it but the server only allows one connection per IP and it says something about No More COnnections for this IP address...

I think the FTP server it actually down now so cant do any tests.

I have looked on the DLink support pages and depending if its internet gaming or remote desktop it shows it doing it different ways. One makes amends to firewall, one makes amends to virtual server

*Confused*
