Safecom router problems with Blueyonder

My daughter uses a Safecom cable router with the Blueyonder setup she shares with 2 flatmates. It worked without any setup or software loading when first installed in October. It stopped after a few weeks. She has tried a new router with no success.
Do we need to assign IP addresses, load any software to the PCs, do anything to the router settings? Is this a known problem with Blueyonder? Why did it work OK for a while then crash?
The girls don't stay plugged in permanently. Is it unrealistic to expect the connection to withstand random switchings on and off by individual users?
Any advice would be gratefully received. As a strictly ADSL man myself, I am lost in the mystery world of cable!

It is obviously possible for a router to fail, but what is puzzling is that your daughter has tried another with no success. One potential cause of that could be that one of the leads connecting the modem to the router or PC may be faulty?

All the correct lights are winking, the PC knows it is connected, but can't get thru to the internet. They don't actually use any other network features. I haven't been able to go and have a look (200 miles away).
It seems at one stage that you needed to register the IP address with Telewest, then this requirement was removed, so we didn't do any of that. Just plugged in and it worked.
She hasn't tried any tricks at all yet - I read about people restoring default settings etc - is this a likely solution?

I'm not sure, this site

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...tips/swap.html

says you still have to register the address, but isn't guaranteed to always be 100% up to date - you could try the clone trick, anyway, though, it is easy enough to put back if it doesn't work
