Dammit, I'm a man on the edge of destorying MS... DNS help
Hey,
I'm sorry if this topic doesn't belong in this section but i'm hanging on to my sanity by a thread here.
I recently purchased an Xbox 360 Preminum pack 5 days ago. I got a Ethenet cable with my 360 and a months free trial to Xbox Live Gold. I can't afford to buy the 360 wireless adapter to connect to my router yet (60 f***ing pounds) so decided to connected to live via my pc and ICS (Internet Connection Sharing.) First i enabled my current network connection to share its internet with other devices. I plugged my 360 into my PC via the ethenet cable given and up popped the connection that stated 'connected, firewalled.' I presumed i was okay to go, so went to the 360 dashboard and clicked on xbox live, only to be presented with a not very nice MS error screen. It said it couldn't connect so it was going to test my Live connection. Network adapter, wired and fine, IP is Confirmed, DNS is failed? Every time i do the test i get this damn 'The DNS could not be reached' error and it's driving me nuts. I rebooted my PC and 360, still didnt work. Updated my routers firmware, nothing. Manually typed in my internets IP, Gateway, DNS etc and still nothing. Iv'e been trying to get it working a good 3 hours now and its really p***ing me off! It feels as though i wasted £279 on this thing and i couldve got more use buying a giant inflatable bouncy castle to connect to live or something.
Anyway, i'm figuring the 360 cannot find my connections DNS. It automatically configures itself too '192.168.0.1'. I allready tried changing that to my pcs DNS and still nothing. I'm trying to connected like this,
Modem
|
Router
/ \
PC PC
|
Xbox 360
If anyone has any ideas of how i might be able to fix this i'd really really appreciate it. Please help if you can, im gunna throw the thing out the window in a minuite.

Look at the router, and at the DNS that is set on that, then configure the XBOX to be set to that DNS address.
It should be the DNS address of your ISP. DNS is your Domain Name Server which translates www.whatever.com into ip addresses.
Welcome to the Forum by the way!
Also : Have a look here...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908884
Note: This actually says set your DNS to be the IP address of the router, so i may be wrong in my assumption above. Either way try what Microsoft says first - then the forum goons.

I allready tried setting the DNS on the xbox to the DNS given for my wireless internet connection. I also tried writing my IP address into a browser to get my router settings up, i found the DNS address on there and tried that also. Still nothing. I checked the site out before and it proved to be no help after doing what it says on there. =[

Ah, but what Microsoft say is that you should set the DNS to be the IP address of your Router.
Try that!
Also try turning off any firewall that is on the PC the Xbox connects too - your protected via your router anyway and it will take one more thing out of the problem for now.
If it proves to be that then we can look at that issue.

You said in another post that you "wrote my IP address into a browser to get my router settings up".
Im guessing the IP address that you put in your browser to get your router settings up is the correct IP address you need to use.
However to make sure, on your PC (assumimg Windows Xp here) if you goto Start->run and type cmd and hit return you will get a small window open.
In there type ipconfig and hit return.
Look at what it says - and where it says Default Gateway - check out the IP address next to it - this is more than likely the IP address of your router.

Re: Dammit, I'm a man on the edge of destorying MS... DNS help
Thanks, i managed to get to the router page.
Okay, i first tried changing the DNS setting on my xbox to my routers IP adress (192.168.2.1) and it still didn't work. After that i tried putting that into the IP thing on my 360, nothing. Next i tried putting my default gateway (82.19.8.1) on that page into the DNS settings and no luck again.

Re: Dammit, I'm a man on the edge of destorying MS... DNS help
EDIT : Before all that on the PC are you sure you followed the instructions on the microsoft page i sent you starting with "Shared connection with Microsoft Windows Internet Connection Sharing"?
Ok,
We need to try a few things to try and find out WHERE the problem is happening, this is where it get boring but it has to be done.
Connect the XBox straight into the Modem if you can (if you are with NTL, you will need to power your router off for about a minute before plugging in the XBox).
If that works - plug the router back into the Modem (remembering to switch the modem off for about a minute again) and then connect the XBOX directly to the router.
If that works its the PC thats causing the problem.
We need to isoate where the issue is happening.

Re: Dammit, I'm a man on the edge of destorying MS... DNS help
yeah, I followed the guide on Xbox.com and took a look at that one afterwards. I enabled ICS on my wireless connection and apparently my xbox is connected to the internet.
Theres a problem with getting the 360 to the router... The router itself is downstairs and the cable wont reach. I can't move the 360 itself as there is no TV in reachable range (plus my mum wouldn't be too impressed with me re-arranging the living room >_> .)
