Getting Google to list your site
Hello,
Fairly simple question....how do you get your site listed in Google's search engine?
I thought it was done with meta tags?
The Google search bots would then indexed the keywords and when you type those keywords into Google as a search, Google would display a link to your site.
Is that theory correct or is there something missing?
I've looked up how to use meta tags - but some sites say it's an old way of doing it and it dosn't work?!
Any ideas?
Cheers
Lee

Google get your list from anywhere. Not just dmoz.org. Although that can help, the more links you get the better

Re: Getting Google to list your site
Use good keywords as has been mentioned above.
Use those keywords in <H1><H1/> , <h2><h2/> ( this is the same as if you had praragraphs and sub-paragraphs in a letter) tags and so on as near as possible to the top of the page.
Make sure you have your main keywords used as a phrase in the very last paragraph at the bottom of your page.
Use keywords in a sentence and make them bold, underlining keywords can help, some search engines will see this as an emphasis of what your site is about.
Get as many relevant links as possible coming into your site, keep away from link farms.
Get an account with Yahoo, then you can list your own site for free, but bear in mind that is a human edited directory and submission will depend of the quality so make it good.
Oh, and then be prepared to wait a while until the spiders attack you.
Just a few ideas to get you started.

Re: Getting Google to list your site
I have been waiting almost 4 months to a get a site listed on Dmoz, it is very slow nowadays. Once on though, many of the main search engines will find you as they use Dmoz for their own Directory links.
Even if you submit to Google it can take some time beore they visit your site, and when they do, they don't always index straight away.
A way to get things moving is to sign up to Google Sitemaps with a Gmail account. You will need to google for some apps that will create a google compatible site map for you, there are some fre php ones around but I use CoffeeCup Google sitemapper which is not free.
If you have some links coming into you, you will be found when the spiders re-index the sites sending them to you.
Create your site map and upload it, sign up to Google Sitemaps to submit it and away you go, you can then login to your account to keep tabs on how it is going using some of their tools.
