Extension cable

Hi
I have moved my PC but my broadband cable doesnt reach.
I phoned up Telewest but they said it'd c ost me 75 pounds to have an engineer come out and fit an extension on it.
Does anyone jknow of a cheaper way of fitting an extension cable?is there a standard cable that i could buy?

Hi, and

to the forums.

I assume you are connecting your Pc to the modem via ethernet cable.
You can leave the modem where it is and just get a long ethernet cable from the modem to your PC.

You can buy some from www.cableuniverse.co.uk and they are quite cheap.

oH NO ITS THE CABLE THAT COMES IN from telewest and attaches onto the telewest modem thats too short!
any ideas?

Why not just leave your modem where it is and get a longer Ethernet Cable is what he's saying?

It still applies. You can leave your modem connected to the telwest point where it is at the moment, and then run ethernet cable from the modem to your PC. Cheapest option.

Alternatively, get a wireless router, hook it up to the modem where the telewest point is and then fit a wireless card in your PC. This solution is if you dont want any wires around your house.

If you are going to want to actually move the telewest main cable you will probaly have to pay the amount they state as the engineer will make sure it is all done correctly and that the signal levels are all OK.

But why move that when you can leave it there and just use ethernet cable to get from that point where the modem is to your PC.

Sorry if I am not understanding what youmean, but that's how I'd do it.

This is the type of cable you would need.
Just choose the length you need and hook one end into your network card on your PC, trail it around your house, and then hook the other end into the modem which is connected to the telwest point in your house.

I used to do Tech support for Telewest

. Instead of getting screwed ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£75 for them to roll out a tech this extension kit from Argos will work extremely well. http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st...&go.x=0&go.y=0

Doesnt matter if you have Motorola or Webstar modem it will work on them all. Happy surfing Ellie

I moved my cable connection this weekend. Bought some FT-125 cable from Maplin (99p/m) and a couple of coax screw-on cable ends. Drilled a big hole through the side of the house, shoved the cable through, cleated the wires in place, unscrewed the existing cable from the box on the outside of the house. screwed my new one in place, and bob was my uncle.

Just bear in mind that the wires on the street side of any modem, set top box, or telephone master socket are for Telewest to maintain, not the customer. Alterning these can in suome situations casue problems with your own connections or those of your neighbours, especially if you do not make good quality electrical connections, use poor quality wiring that affects signal resistivity or allows interference.

I recommend that you replace that, whilst it may work to some degree you will be introducing interference into the system both in your house and backwards into the street. You need some nice higher than satelite grade cable with proper crimped on connectors. see above for the right stuff and its not dear.
