Problem with Belkin Pre-N Router

Hi,

I've got a bit of an odd problem with my Belkin Pre-N wireless router and my NTL broadband connection.

I've had my router up and running for about six months with absolutely no problems, and have set up a wireless network and internet connection for a laptop and a desktop (one running XP Home, one XP Pro.) All has been working fine and very reliably until a week or so ago.

I am now getting intermittent connection on both PC's, and am regularly losing connection to the network. It will work fine for a few hours, and then suddenly lose the network on both PC's simultaneuosly. Re-booting the PCs / router / modem makes no difference. The weird thing is that when I use the supplied software to view available networks, my network still shows up, with 97%-100% signal strength. When I double click on it to connect however, it won't let me. All firewalls / passwords etc are set up correctly, and occasionally the network will come back for a while, then go again.

It appears to be a router problem as I also can see another (unsecured) network which I can connect to with no problem, so the network cards appear to be working correctly. If I bypass the wireless and plug directly into the modem, the connection works fine.

I have reinstalled both the router and the cards and this solves the problem for a few hours, then the same things happen again...

I have also recently been experiencing general internet connection drop-outs for the first time in 2 years of being with NTL recently - however usually these have not resulted in a network dropout, just an internet drop-out, (i.e. I can still share files between the computers wirelessly) so I thought this was a separate issue - is there any chance they are related somehow?

Any help would be hugely appreciated!!!!!

Thanks

Re: Problem with Belkin Pre-N Router

Is the SSID broadcast on the router disabled? My network at home is secured, but I found that with SSID disabled my network and my neighbour's network tried to use the same channel, which cause interferance on my network, and possibly interfered with his.

No it's not - I'm broadcasting on channel 7 (selected automatically), and my neighbour is on channel 11. I've tried putting my network on a different channel (channel 5) manually aswell, but the same problem persists.

Thanks for the reply!

Re: Problem with Belkin Pre-N Router

Hi matey im new to this forum but glad ive found it.

Ive got NTL with a wireless router and the problem im having is similar. The net works fine with the wired connection to my desktop, but as soon as i use my laptop which is wireless, the connection lasts for about a minute then just goes dead. It then takes a hectic reset sequence to get it to work again, which again only lasts a minute. The internet dies across both computers not just the laptop

Is this similar?

Re: Problem with Belkin Pre-N Router

Hi mate,

Not sure if it's exactly the same problem as both my PCs are wireless, but I did manage to find a solution in the end...

Basically I just kept trying different channels until I found one that worked - my router is now broadcasting on channel 1 with no problems. I think someone in a nearby house must have installed some hardware that was interfering, but changing the channel seemed to work (eventually) for me.

Sounds like your problem may be a bit different, but may be worth a try.

Quick thought - do you have more than one wireless adaptor in your laptop? I know a friend who had two, and he needed to disable one of them to connect to his network as having two active seemed to cause confliction.
