query about sharing NTL broadband between two PCs please.

Hi,

I got a new computer a little before Christmas and I give my old computer to my Mum and helped her a little bit so she uses my NTL broadband now (2MB).

Im getting sick of swapping cable. The cablework is already in place I dont need wireless.

I just simply want my computer and my Mums computer to be hooked up to my broadband at the same time (share the broadband so dont have to keep swapping cables).

Can just confirm I need a router to do this and thats it?

Will this do the trick and is the price ok?:

http://www.gladiatorcomputers.com/Pr...=SearchResults

Is it basically the router is connected to the settop box the has the cable modem in it and then my computer and my mums computer connect to the router?

One last thing my new comp has XP pro but my old computer my mum has has win 2000 pro - will this be a problem or not?

Sorry for so many question but would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Phil.

That will do the trick- and the price seems reasonable.

The only piece of dynamode kit that i have used is a switch, but i never had any problems with it.

Hopefully someone else will have had some experience of this router.

I use a Linksys BEFSX41, firewall 4 port router, and have my pc and laptop connected with no problem!

you can get a dlink router for £23 delivered!

pretty sure it works with cable, may be better deals out there though i only did a quick search of amazon.

if your host computer, the one with the internet connection has two ethernet connection ports on the back, and your mums computer has one ethernet connection, you could link the two computers together using a cat five cable, its a cable thats basically crossed . then link up the host computer to your cable modem in the normal way, on the host computer install a good firewall that will permit a network connection, like sygate personal firewall pro, or kiro personal firewall pro.
a simple but cheap way to connect two computers.
if you decide to install a router, then perhaps it would be worth considering a cable router with firewall built in

Re: query about sharing NTL broadband between two PCs please.

this look ok.

just reminder that you migth have to enter in a Clone MAC address into the router, as NTL does not like you having 2 or more machines on the line.

Don't ask me why, but when I phoned up, just before I added a second machine onto my network. I was told that they not like the idea, but away around it is to enter in the clone address so that all they will see is a single address.

then again it might have changed over the years. ?

It's easiest to clone the MAC address, but not vital. If you don't, it just means you'll need to 're-provision', i.e. enter your original PID and password again.
