Question Wireless Internet!

Hey guys! I'm Jack! Nice to meet everyone here a CF! Ok, I just got 2MB BB Internet from NTL today! Great job. Really fast and have been looking at loads of websites (Thats how I came across this one!). Ok, I have a son who got a new computer for christmas and would like internet too! So, I just wondering could anyone give me any good ideas to what wireless box thingy to get him? Can anyone find me any good deals too?

Thanks in advance!

Jack.

Re: Wireless Internet!

I would recommend the Linksys WRT54G - works well for me and many others on the NTL / TW cable networks. This is a cable only router and needs further hardware to work with ADSL.

Click the Amazon link below and it is pretty good value from there. You will need to buy some wireless hardware for sons PC also.

It's quite simple - you can virtualy "plug and play" but you need to read the manual to add that extra bit of security to stop Joe Public using you net connection!

I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router (Amazon UK Link) and it's excellent!

Don't forget you need a Wireless PCI or USB adapter for other PC's.

Use Pricerunner to get a good deal, or check out eBay!

Re: Wireless Internet!

That's good deal! I found one on PC World and thought it would be good just to check if it would work with NTL -

Would this pack do?

One question... did your son get a laptop PC or a desktop PC? If he got a laptop, look for a wireless router deal with a PCMCIA card included (this is the small credit card sized bit of kit he'll need to connect to the wireless router) whereas if he has a desktop PC then look for one that has a so-called wireless NIC (or network interface card) that will be installed inside his PC - assuming he doesn't already have one included, of course

Alternatively, you could go for a USB wireless network card, which will work in both a laptop or a desktop PC, as it just plugs in to a spare USB socket on the PC.

As for recommendations... like lsainsbury, I can recommend the Linksys WRT54G as being compatible and reliable Maplin were doing a very good offer a couple of months ago, which was the modem and a laptop PCMCIA card for about £60-ish. Ended up buying one for my big Sis, and installing it all for her too

Re: Wireless Internet!

If you son does have a laptop don't forget to check to see if its got builtin wireless before spending money on a pcmcia card

Which ever router you decide to get ensure you setup the wireless secuirty options to stop your neighbours/passers by from connecting to your network.
