Speed Query 2Mb & Network

Hi, I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction with this query

I have two machines networked through a Belkin F5d5231-4 Router. One machine is a P4 3.2 running XP and the other is a P3 800 running W98SE. I have an NTL 2Mb broadband connection.

The P4 runs fine and there are no problems with the connection on that one. A speed test shows D/L 1903 kbps and U/L 186 kbps.

However, the older P3 machine never seems to get a fast connection and the same speed test shows D/L 616 kbps and U/L 186 kbps.

I have tried altering the network card settings on the P3 (Belkin F5D5000 NIC) between Auto and 100 Full but the speed always seems to hover around the 600 mark.

Is there some other setting that I need to change or anything anyone can think of as to why that machine will not connect at the same speed.

Many thanks

Re: Speed Query 2Mb & Network

IIRC XP has a much better TCP/IP stack than 98SE (which is ancient, predating fast broadband connections by a good few years). You'd be better off either installing XP on the second box or going Linux.
