Radeon 9800
Ok - so I just ordered a radeon9800 to upgrade from my (nearly in the bin) gf4mx460.
Can anyone please reccomend some games that are really going to show off what this card can do?
Also - waht kind of score can I expect in 3dmark2003 with this card?
I have a athlon xp2600 and 768mb ddr 333 ram.
Cheers for your advice

Any DX9 specific game should show the capabilities of the card.
3dmark score will depend upon drivers and any latency problems that may be affecting your computer.
AGP latency can be fairly high. SIsoft Sandra will show you info on this potential problem.
You would probably do well to forget about the score on 3Dmark and decide whether you are happy with it. After all a score doesnt mean a lot does it?

Re: Radeon 9800
Is this the 9800 pro or not ???, try ut2003 put all video settings to max (till it says "holy ****") this is a nice game to show off your nice new card also add 4x anti aliasing and 8x anisotropic filtering, it will look the business (oh and put v-sync on for good measure
edit - your 3dmark 2003 score (if its the pro version) will be approx 5250- 6000, try aquamark 3 as well as i find 3d mark 2003 pants

It is a hercules 3dprophet9800 - non pro.
Although I did hear that you could flash the bios to turn it into a pro.
I can't wait 'till the morning for it to be delivered

You will find that Both Nvidia and ATI have been found cheating more than once.
I also think that recently ATI were caught again for something that wasnt considered "right".
Most GFX card manufacturers will optimise code for specific games, whilst it isnt illegal it is frowned upon as it gives false results.
Nvidia seems to be catching up again with the FX5900 Ultra. Should pass ATI before long then the game will start all over again.
I have issues with some of the poeple that claim frame rates of 60 and 70FPS, there is a limit to what the human eye can detect, same as refresh rates. Yes the game may be reporting massive frame rates, but can your eye prove it?
As for the whole ATI v Nvidia, well, I'm Nvidia through and through. I just dont see ATI being able to hold the lead on the market for much longer. The 9800 may be a good card, but so is the 5900 Ultra. As drivers progress the cards will get more and more squeezed from them. There is no arguing that ATI is th ebest for AA etc, but I honestly find that AA makes little difference when you crank the resolutions up.
Nvidia have taken a hammering recently, but the detonator 51.XX drivers are out now and they have made a huge dif to my FX5200.

The 5900 is old news, and lagged behind the 9800 pro in most worthwhile tests. The 5950 also appears to fall well behind the 9800 XT, I doubt Nvidia will ever catch up and they will certainly never "pass them" (especially if they end up taking no part in half of the DX10 development as they did with DX9). As for frame rates, you only have to run Fraps to show what your FPS are.

nope, meant what i said, 6x and 16x might suffer slowdown (fps not hardware) with his current processor, ut2003 is VERY processor hungry and on levels like antulus or flux 2 the fps might suffer on max settings 6x and 16x

He'll be fine with an Athlon XP 2600, I used to run it at 6x/16x with a 2400+, less memory (running at a slower speed) on a 9700 pro with no noticable hit in performance.

Re: Radeon 9800
ok - it's all installed now.
I used the included Hercules 3d tweaker to run it at 380mhz core and 340(680)mhz Ram speed.
My 3d mark 2003 score is always around 5300.
I'm pretty impressed with it I must admit.
