Re: pc and laptop connected with usb

You can only connect one device at a time to the modem (or STB). You can unplug the PC, power cycle (off at the power then on again) the modem (STB), then plug in the lappy. Only one can be connected and used at a time.

I'd rush off to get a router

Re: pc and laptop connected with usb

Check out ICS, gavnad - Internet Connection Sharing. I've never used it myself; router is the obvious route, but check it out in Start -> Help.

Re: pc and laptop connected with usb

Im Using ICS as my main pc is always on anyway and just linked it to a hub(run multiple pcs).Remember if your just connecting direct pc--laptop then you need crossover cable.Ive your buying a switch dont buy a router
Once linked just run network creation wizard and select
"This computer connects directly to the internet.Other computers on my network connect to the internet though this computer" on main pc
On laptop select "This computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway or through another computer on my network" This is if your just using crossover cable.
If you buy a router an connect both to this using straight cable just reboot modem and router this should give connection to both

I think the idea is the OP is just looking for a temporary christmas time solution until they can source a router, zingle. ;-)

Re: pc and laptop connected with usb

Certainly. I was just commenting on your remark to buy a switch rather than a router. ;-)
