Cool wireless ntl broadband wont connectto laptop

hi all first time on forum need urgent help going mental.
well of course i am with ntl and i have a emachine computer and i could not install my netgear router and a netgear lan card to my lap top for wireless connection.
so i got a bloke in to to install it god it cost £30 quid an hour.
so he has installed them both lan card says full connectivity and the router is the same they are connecting to each other but cannot get web page on the laptop the laptop that i have got is refurbished but he says its still reading the router but theres something in the machine thats stopping it get the web page.

well i wasn't happy so i phoned up the company i got the ibm think pad laptop of, of and he said he was wrong and that i needed a cable modem god and he sells them for £80 quid and he said i needed a cable modem for well i not sure if its for the laptop or the dektop, well iv'e got a modem for for ntl so whats the matter here. shouldn't the netgear just work fine on it's own.

Re: wireless ntl broadband wont connectto laptop

quite the wireless prob tonight he he

ok

let me get this straight, ur with NTL, do u connect thru ur Set Top Box, STB or a Stand Alone CAble Modem,

the connections should run like this - cable connection into the SACB for example, ethernet connection from that to the WAN port on the Netgear router. The wireless? lan card should slot in to the laptop. From dead, turn on the modem only until lights settle, then the router and then the laptop.

What OS are u using? XP has a built in wireless facility and will automatically pick up the connection to the router. Remember to tuen off the Firewall in XP as the router will now act as the firewall.

for the likes of windoze 98 and perhaps 2000/ME, use the configuration utility for the lan card to 'see' the router and connect to it.

more info helps us all
SACB?

Re: wireless ntl broadband wont connectto laptop

Right unplug the modem form the power then plug in the ethernet cable into the modem then into the wan port on the router. Then plug the router using a ethernet cable into the computer and turn on the modem 1st, when its fired up turn on the router, then turn on the pc.

After that follow then netgear instructions to access the page on the router 192.168.1.1 or something similar.

Don't think there much to change there but make sure you have a ssid set something memorable and that you have security off for now. ( needs turning on after you get it all working).

Some routers have wireless turned of as standard so check this is not the case.

After you have this sorted you should have internet to the pc. you can then try the wireless which should also connect.

XP sp2?......still nothing how odd. everythin handyman says is correct also.

how bout the connection properties for IE (bit of an assumption there) ensure it never dials a connectin and go thru the setup for a new connection.

Re: wireless ntl broadband wont connectto laptop

i've just googled the emachine bit and as far as i can understand what u have is a broadband connection on the pc only not an actual separate modem. Ur internet comes to u how, via ur set top box?
