Problem with Netgear RP114 and NTL Home 250

For a good many years I've been using a Netgear RP114 router connected to my STB. This has worked great... never any problems.

Because I've dumped NTL for TV services, today the STB was replaced with an "NTL Home 250" Cable Modem. The cable modem works fine when a PC is connected directly to, however when I connect the Netgear RP114, the router can't get a DHCP address for the WAN port. I have rebooted everything, I've also reset the MAC address spoofing on the RP114.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Try a manufacturer settings restore on the router - clear out anything you might have loaded specific to the STB. Also ensure the modem has been rebooted having changed between the PC and router (only one must connect direct to the modem. I don't think it's an issue as your PC can connect, but check the ehternet cable is the right type i.e. straight through not crossover.

Re: Problem with Netgear RP114 and NTL Home 250

Hi Rob

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried reseting the Netgear to factory default settings and going through the installation process again. I've rebooted the cable modem before powering up the router. The cable must be right as it works with the PC (it also worked with the STB).

I'm still getting 0.0.0.0 as the WAN IP address.

Any more suggestions?
Thanks,

Try upgrading the router firmware to the latest revision and then power it down switch off the modem let it get the sync and ready lights solid then power up the router...

Hi Ian, I have exactly the same router and am switching from my Tera modem to an NTL one tonight. I'll let you know if I have the same problem and how I get round it.

Re: Problem with Netgear RP114 and NTL Home 250

Kevin,

The RP114 is at the latest firmware. I've done the traditional, power everything off and restart them one at a time: Modem, then Router, then PC. Alas still no joy.

Jon,
I would certainly like to know how you get on. What does bother me is that it looks like the so called NTL 'configuration' CD is installing software on the PC. Why it should need to when using an RJ45 conection is a bit of a mystery, but I'm begining to wonder if NTL have 'crippled' the NTL:250 Cable Modem to prevent it from being used with a router.

If anyone else is using this make of modem with a router I'd be interested to know.

Regards,

There is no need to touch the install CD if you use the ethernet connection.
The only thing you need to do on the PC is point it's default gateway IP address to the router (if you're not using DHCP internally) and define the NTL DNS servers.
The router should supply these details along with DHCP, but don't quote me on that as I've always set mine up manually.

Re: Problem with Netgear RP114 and NTL Home 250

Jon,
...and prior to today I've never let an NTL installaion disk in the same room as my PC let alone used it! (They play around with the pc config far too much for my liking).

However today even the simple set up of PC connected direct to modem would not work unless I ran the install disk. :-(

I agree with what you say 100% if you use Ethernet there *should* be no reason to install anything. Which is why I'm now thinking NTL have crippled this model of modem.

Anyone know anything about the NTL:250 (a.k.a. NTL Home 250 Cable Modem)?
