One way of proving that you'll never do it again.

Typical.... he just did it to save face by beating others to it

That story doesn't actually suprize me.... i'd actually like to know what happens to him and the reprecussions of his actions.... and not just due to the physical self-mutilation. The 'news' story says that he did it for sympathy.... or did he do it as a genuine attempt at proving his disgrace and shame? It might be considered a worthy action by some of the victims of his lies and cheating.... some might forgive and see it as a suitable punishment
In England, he'd be having psychological help from mental health services for his actions....
Shame we'll never find out what happened to him and his family/friends..... but i don't think that 'it' proves that he'll never do anything like that again.... depends on why he did it all in the first place.... and there are ways and means

Yes.. i think it's an extreme action to take..... but in a weird way i understand it, in many ways.... weirder things happen every day

Re: A bit drastic...

Apart from the normal Male reaction (ie crossing my legs and saying "Ouch"), surely filing for bankruptcy is far less painful.

Although, that depends on who he borrowed the money from.
