Tivo packages available in 2020

In another four to five years, the pace of change will only increase and the TV packages offered by all the main players are likely to be very different from what they are now.

It would be pretty impossible to make a sensible guess about the actual channels we will have, but I would like to see the following offerings from Virgin Media:

A package of subscription and pay per view streaming services offering more titles than any other provider.

An extra bundle made available containing linear TV channels we cannot currently obtain, at a cost that those who wish to have it will have to pay.

An upgraded TIVO box with sufficient memory available to provide faster speed, with the ability to identify programmes you want to see later through the cloud (instead of through recordings).

An on demand selection of archived TV titles that is second to none.

An enhanced music video service featuring all the current hits on the music scene and including a massive selection of oldies and album tracks from the last few decades.

I’m fairly optimistic that most of this will actually come before 2020, provided that VM does not move away from linear channels by then, as at least one operator is reported as doing right now according to theone.

What TV packages or developments on TIVO would you like to see on offer in 2020? Have I missed anything?

Novel idea OB, but how much do you think that will cost?

I am thinking it will cost a great deal more in the future than it does now!

Re: Tivo packages available in 2020

All of that is pretty much already available if you buy a decent streaming box so nothing really innovative there.

Who's the operator moving away from linear now ?

Yes, but you need to buy some extra kit to do it.

I don't know which operator is moving away from linear - theone has the answer to that but I don't think he's at liberty to say.

However, I'm sure others will follow, as discussed elsewhere.

Well, that remains to be seen. If you buy into everything, it may well cost more, and PPV is an expensive way of viewing anyway.

However, most will probably choose which of these packages to subscribe to, rather than get the whole kaboosh. Given the amount of dross, even on the Sky channels, and the sheer choice you get on the streaming services, there will be many who just opt for the freeview stuff and the add a streaming pack on top. That would probably give you more choice at a cheaper price than now if you happen to subscribe to all the TV channel packages at the moment.

Re: Tivo packages available in 2020

And how then does VM make money on its TV packages if most just have the Freeview channels and a streaming package ?

There is no UK broadcaster planning to abandon linear anytime soon.

Presumably by agreeing wholesale cost deals with the various providers and charging the going rate to customers. The difference between the reduced wholesale price and the cost price to customers provides the profit.

On a package that costs between £5-£7 , I bet those margins will be huge.

.

So only a 'one box only' solution works for you?

Like I've said before, you really need to talk to VM about putting a DVD/BR drive on to Tivo.

Failing VM obliging you on that one, the simple addition of an LG bluray player, will give you access to the main services missing from Tivo, and also play DVDs!

Well, wouldn't a 'one box' solution suit everyone? Much less expense and hassle. As long as the speed wasn't a problem, that is!

But while you're growing old, waiting for that to happen, one extra box will cover your needs.

We really aren't far away from a one-box solution, keep your eye on BT and its Youview boxes combining Freeview, Netflix and other apps. At the moment they only have Now Movies + SkySports 1&2 but don't be surprised if the Entertainment pack doesn't arrive soon. The G4 Youview box combines Freeview & IPTV services and can record both, apparently there will be a G5 box arriving in the not too distant future.

Good news but OLDBOY wants a box that includes all the pay TV channels.

Who pays to maintain the infrastructure? Several thousand miles of fibre and Coax, with related equipment isn't going to power and maintain itself, and with the relatively low broadband prices in this country, it's unlikely that Virgin will make a profit on anyone just taking broadband, unless they wack the contention ratio right up, which will torpedo any on demand services in a lot of heavily populated areas.
