Powerline adaptors

Many people here have used these? done some testing recently and speed seems to be low on them compared to standard cat5 cable run (i am using an older powerline adaptor so could just be that).
Will be building an extension soon and having an office put in, so need to make a descision whether to use powerline adaptors or find a way to run a cat5cat6 cable from the Virgin router to the office.
Anyone used one it exceeds the 100+mbps speed virgin offer?

A proper ethernet cable will always be better than powerline adapters. I've not used them myself but many people around here seem to get in the 50-100Mbps range with an occasional lucky person getting just a little over 100. Because of it's RF and half-duplex nature though it'll never perform as good as even a cheap ethernet cable.

They connect A to B. Don't expect anything amazing but if you need a simpe connection then you (generally) get it with them.

That's what i thought, will run a shielded cat6 cable to the new office with a gigabit switch at the office end. Cheers guys.

I use TP-Link 500 and hardly notice any speed reduction

Have you tested the speed with the TP-Link used and then with a cable directly into router?

In my experience of setting up networks, if you can run a cable to it, run a cable. If you're having the electrics done professionally then the electricians might be able to do the job for you.

Yes, the TP Links serve my TV, Blu Ray etc in the lounge;via a 5 port switch; if I plug my laptop into the switch I get almost the max speed I get from my laptop upstairs plugged into the SH

Read what I said, I get 50Mb from my wired laptop upstairs and between 45 and 48 wired to the switch connected to my home plug downstairs

My original query was about powerline adaptors supporting 100+ when used. I'm not sure the do from what I've seen and will be using a network cable for best performance.
