Anyone have a slow down in browsing

Hi,

Has anyone noticed a slow down in browsing?

On speedtests I am getting 105M / 4.91M with a ping of between 5ms and 20ms, depending on time of day.

But I have noticed a slow down in browsing websites, that use to load fast, but now load slow.

It is not 1 or 2 sites, it is a lot of sites.
I am in the Lincoln area.

It seem to have happened since a re-seg and I started using different downstream channel id's

I have attached 2 images with my levels in them

File Type: jpg upstream.jpg (54.1 KB, 18 views)

Re: Anyone have a slow down in browsing

Main PC is weird and my phone which is wireless seem a bit slower then normal, from the same room as the superhub.

Wireless to the other PC has always been slow due to range.

Re: Anyone have a slow down in browsing

how many devices are linked wired? try linking another if theres only 1 to see if its your main pc

if you have no manual settings set on the SuperHub which take forever setting again then try the hard pinhole reset. check connectors and all.

Re: Anyone have a slow down in browsing

Before you do anything, try a different browser on your PC. If you use Chrome, try Firefox or vice-versa. Your pings, speedtests and tracerts don't show anything out of the ordinary.

Re: Anyone have a slow down in browsing

I think that none of the above remedies will make a jot of difference if the underlying condition persists.

Given the good ping (is that consistent?), then I'd suspect the VM DNS. Unfortunately, VM in their stupidity prevent you from changing the DNS servers (although you can at least on the PC set your own DNS in the TCP/IP properties which might be worth trying).

In modem mode, I've set my router to use Google DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4). Whenever I see a lag in loading web pages, my TBB graph shows an increase in average latency and my JDAST speed test shows a drop in upstream speed.

Re: Anyone have a slow down in browsing

Good call on the DNS, I forgot about that (And it makes sense).

I personally use OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 or 208.67.220.220) as my primary DNS and Google as my secondary (8.8.8.8) but it's personal preference really.

Re: Anyone have a slow down in browsing

Virgins DNS servers are often slower than alternatives off their network. Worth changing them even if you don't notice issues as it will most likely speed up how fast web pages show anyway.

I have 1 PC wired, but never had problem before till recently.

I have my Android mobile that connect wireless to the SuperHub and can be slow at times, even early in the morning, I woke up today at around 4am and I tested on my mobile and it was a bit slow.

The wireless PC at the other end of the house, has always been slow, think it is a distance thing.

I also have my Xbox 360 wired and noticed a slow down on that.

The SuperHub was rebooted 4 days ago, if it was wonder, I may of rebooted it to see if it made a different.

I normally go between IE9 and Firefox, but will give Chrome and Opera a try as I have them installed.

The ping during the day is normally 5/10ms at night it goes 10/15/20ms

Never though of that one, this could be the problem, as the DNS is not the greatest at the best of times, I don't have the money at the moment to get a router, and putting it into modem mode.

It does seem to come and go in waves of a week or so at a time, sometime less, sometimes more.

I would of said overload on the network around here, but I can get full speed at 6/7/8pm with a 15/20ms ping

Re: Anyone have a slow down in browsing

You can set the DNS in the TCP/IP properties of your ethernet card on the PC. That should force your outbound call to that server rather than the router's default.

You don't have to be in modem mode for this to work.

I think that's right.

You are quite correct.

Google has instructions here: https://developers.google.com/speed/...dns/docs/using

OpenDNS has some instructions here: http://use.opendns.com/

(remember, you can replace the OpenDNS IP's with Google's, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively - or use one of each for better redundency!).

Virgin's DNS are on average usually the fastest, or at worst, second fastest. That said, when they have problems they have big problems.
