changing from an old wired Router to a new Wireless Router ?

Hi all, i know a nice lady who is struggling with a very ancient and very large Dell tower, she is getting an iPad2 for Christmas (which will be entirely adequate for her needs), i am going to be the chosen one to help her set it up !.
She currently connects to the Internet with a very ancient NTL/Virgin Media Wired Router.

I dont know why, but Virgin Media posted her, a few years ago, a brand new Wireless Router which is still unopened.

I am trying to visualise ANY problems she might have if she uses this Wireless Router in place of her current ancient Router.

It probably isnt a simple case of swapping them over, IS IT ? , i wish it was ?

What problems am i likely to face please ? Do i have to phone up Support for an IP address or something similar, Please help, i would like this transition to be as foolproof as is humanly possible.

I have just discovered, reading a nearby post, that connecting an iPad to a Wireless Virgin Media Router isnt without problems anyway !!!!.

My missus has an iPad2 which i could take to this ladies house for a DUMMY run beforehand if i had to, if there is likely to be a problem ON CHRISTMAS DAY !!!!

 TIM

Presumably the broadband service is provided via a modem, rather than superhub, if there is a separate wired router. In theory it should be as simple as powering modem and router off, swapping the connections, powering up the modem, then the router, and finally then configuring the router.
Cable modems must be power cycled whenever the device directly attached to it is swapped over.

Routers are best configured from a wired (ethernet) connection first and then you can set the wireless on it. Don't forget to ensure the security protocols are active. Hopefully the old Dell tower networking things are set to auto so it would simply pick op the connectivity of the new router.

Of course if stuff is that old, the customer might wish to consider changing to a current, basic package that will include the superhub, and that is already wireless enabled.

All the instructions should be in the box with the new router but (if I remember correctly; it's been a while!) basically you replace on with the other then go to http://activation.virginmedia.com/Activation/ and follow the instructions.

You shouldn't have to activate a router as that sits on the house side of the Internet.
