Best network setup for sharing with neighbour...

Ok, so my neighbour pays me £10/mth to share my internet connection as Virgin won't install in his property. Not ideal but he's a nice guy. At the minute my setup looks like:

But in addition to my ongoing problems with Virgin's 50mb service, I suspect my neighbour to be hogging a lot of bandwidth. I've tried using QOS etc to limit the effect he has on me but to no avail.

So, would something like this work better?:

Where I could use the DIR-615 as an AP and have the neighbour's PC(s) on a different subnet to our own?

Also, I have an unused brand new Gigabit switch sitting here, could that be used to any advantage in this network?

Cheers!

I think you'll find what you're doing is against Virginmedia's terms and conditions

Re: Best network setup for sharing with neighbour...

as v0id says its illegal but highlight the issue, watch how quick VM act on getting a connection into his property.

with regards to your DD WRT... can you not filter him ? also don't flood the SH by putting it back into modem/router mode and hooking up the additional router.

No he's not a neighbour, I'm was talking about my wife! But I didn't want to be flamed for saying I wanted to restrict my wife's bandwidth! lol

Never thought of the neighbour thing being against T&C's. lol

Being against the T&C's isn't unlawful or illegal.. All it means is if VM ever found out you could have your account terminated

Re: Best network setup for sharing with neighbour...

If limiting the bandwidth through QoS isn't having an effect then bandwidth clearly isn't the problem...
