Setting up router (Netgear) problem

I'm trying to help a friend set-up a Netgear N150 WNR1000v2 router. He's on Virgin broadband, via a cable modem.

Firstly the setup CD wouldn't load (even though when I tested it later it worked on mine) so had to use the "No CD Drive" option from the manual.

I typed the address given in the manual (http://www.routerlogin.net) into the browser but it redirected to a Netgear support webpage for finding your model, rather than the page advertised in the manual, which shows a pop-up box for entering user name and password.

I also tried the IP number address of 192.168.1.1 (as seen on internet) but this took ages and then had a Gateway - timed out error.

All the time we were trying to get wireless set-up we were able to get on the internet OK, so the internet connection was live. Connections were ethernet from back of cable modem to router, and then one from there into PC.

Can anyone suggest how to get this login page up? Thanks.

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

OK first the basics. When you connect a new device to the cable modem, i.e. swap a router for a computer, then you must power off the cable modem for a few seconds else it can't "see" the new router.

I've never worried about a CD based setup. You tend only to need CD's for drivers if you are adding something to the computer itself, i.e. a wireless card in the computer.

If you have powered everything off, including computer, then booted modem, then router, then comnputer, if all have wired connections between them you should have an internet connection. Assuming you do now look at the properties for the computer's network card. That should tell you the IP range being used i.e 192.168.x.xxx. The properties may also give you the gateway. The gateway IP should be your router's webpage setup address. From there you should be able to configure the router, and wireless stuff.

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

Thanks for your response.

I will try again and turn everything off, then connect the wires up, then turn on modem, then router, then PC.

I then need to type into a browser http://192.xxxx as per 'gateway IP' computer. Is that the same as the IP Address line that I get from the ipconfig command in cmd? This should lead me to the login page I need?

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

Having has a quick look at the docs for that model it appears that the IP address of the router should be 192.168.1.1 which is what you attempted to connect to.

Are you sure that the PC/Laptop is set to get its IP address via DHCP?

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

I'm not sure whether the PC gets its IP address via DHCP. How do I check that?

---------- Post added at 12:38 ---------- Previous post was at 11:43 ----------

I've tried it again and the 192.168.1.1 page does not load, and after a while comes up with

"Gateway Timeout
The following error occurred:
[code=GATEWAY_TIMEOUT] A gateway timeout occurred. The server is unreachable. Retry the request.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please contact the administrator. "

However, I checked my ipad2 and it is picking up the wireless signal fine and I am able to access it, so what I need to do now is to set a password so that it becomes a closed network.

Given that the CD does not load on the PC and the above page does not load so I can't get to login page, how do I set up encryption so it becomes a closed network? Thanks.

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

To check if the PC is set to DHCP do the following

Click the Start button and type cmd in the search programs and files box, then press enter

When the cmd box appears type ipconfig /all, then press enter

Now tell us what it says for DHCP enabled , IPv4 Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

I obtained the info you requested, although this was done when the wireless was not connected, but I assume this will not alter the below results:

DHCP Enabled - Yes
IP Address - 80.3.21.xx
Subnet Mask - 255.255.xxx.x
Default Gateway - 80.3.20.x

Is it a matter of typing in the IP Address. Would that bring up the Netgear login page?

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

That IP address looks like the address that VM allocate to your connection.

From that I infer that the PC is connected directly to the modem rather than the router. That is why you cannot connect to the routers home page.

Turn Modem, Router and PC off.

Then you need to make sure that the VM modem plugs into the WAN port of the router which is normally yellow in colour. Then plug your PC into 1 of the 4 LAN ports that are normally black in colour.

Then power on modem, wait for 2-3 mins, power on router, wait for 2-3 mins, then power on PC and see what you get this time.

Re: Setting up router (Netgear) problem

We have now had a Superhub router/modem installed by Virgin instead. The connection works, but still having problems getting to a login/setup page to amend the details. I type http://192.168.0.1 as per the guidance but it is still coming up with the same Gateway Timeout error I describe above.

Having done the ipconfig command again I get some different settings now as per below:

DHCP Enabled - Yes
IP Address - 192.168.0.x (different to default gateway ending)
Subnet Mask - 255.255.xxx.x
Default Gateway - 192.168.0.x

How do I get to the login/set-up page to amend the network password etc?

Confusingly, when I went to access the Wi Fi using my ipad and it asks for a "password" I actually had to type the "passphrase" field from the back of the superhub, and not the "password" entry.

I'd be grateful for any further thoughts as to how I can get to the logon page to change the password. Thanks.
