Gaming Router Help

PS3 gaming router help!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi im new to this forum so apollogies in advance if im posting in the wrong section.

I live in a rural location and im sick of slow/laggy internet when gaming. i have a Edimax wire/wireless ADSL 2+ router 10/100 switch connected into my BT NTE5 master socket 10m away in my loft.

My 60gb PS3 is connected to it via the ethernet cable included with the playstation. my ISP is talk talk and ive just upgraded to their llu plus package which goes live in my area on 22/12/12.

I'm currently recieving between 1.2-1.3 download speed and 1-2 upload (ive ran multiple speed tests via u-switch.com) and i'm still getting crippling lag when playing online e.g COD: MW3 and i was wondering if any of you technically minded people could help me?

I'm hoping to recieve faster speeds from my ISP when my new package goes live but i was wondering if:

A new wireless N router with 300mbps or 600mbps would help.

A BT i-plate/broadband accelerator would be beneficial?

A hi speed modem cable and a better ethernet cable would be better?

all help appreciated in advance.

Re: Gaming Router Help

Your PS3 is connected by wire to the router, and the router is wired to the ADSL socket. Wireless "n" is not going to be used.

ADSL isn't going to be especially fast even with the upgrade. So whatever the router and network configuration your internet speed is the governing factor to the bandwidth available to your gaming. You can't get more than is available just by having a router that enables a faster speed within your home network. But if your router is old, it may be that at least an upgrade of it's firmware (the operating system on the router) might be beneficial - check with the manufacturer's website for the current version), or perhaps it is getting on a bit and something is failing in which case a replacement is worht it.

As for the BT connection, a best suggestion seems to have the ADSL filter plugged into a master socket, not an extension with the router connected to that filter. If you have extensions to your phone wiring, juggle them about so they are wired to the phone port of the ADSL filter so there is only one filter in your house, on the master socket.

Re: Gaming Router Help

@Rob

thank you for your response. my apologies for multiple threads, i was unsure of where was best to post this topic.

the router is 2007 so nearly 5 years old. i was considering upgrading the firmware but was unsure as to whether the new router to be supplied by talk talk would be superior anyway so i will wait and see.

i'm sorry i forgot to mention that the new package will be ADSL 2+ so maybe that would affect the choice of router. i live 1.2 miles from my local BT exchange.

so an adsl filter between my rj11 line and the BT master socket will help as opposed to between the router and the rj11 extension line? sorry i should have been more specific.

Re: Gaming Router Help

ADSL 2+ only has a maximum speed of 24mbps, so you are still well within the capabilities of wired 10/100 routers and "b" speed (54mbps) wireless routers.

Yes put the DSL filter/splitter on the master socket, not an phone extension.

Re: Gaming Router Help

okay, i'm guessing from your response that what i may have is a cable problem here.

i have an ethernet between ps3 and router

modem wire (i forget what wire this is rj45?) from router into a ADSL Speedtouch filter

this filter has a phone line (rj11?) coming out and into a 10-15m phone cable (rj11 again?)

which then goes into a surge protector and then directly into the BT master socket.

do i have a cable issue that i could clear up here?

Re: Gaming Router Help

BT Master socket <> ADSL Filter <> Router <> PS3

Get rid of things like the surge protector and get the wiring as simple as possible. It may or may not make a difference. ADSL speeds largely depend on the quality of th phone line and it's distance from the exchange so chances are it is nothing to do with how your home is wired, but you want that as simple as possible so you aren't creating more overheads.

Re: Gaming Router Help

so if i was to install the bt i-plate which blocks the interefrence from the bell wire it would then have a seperate modem jack at the master socket as well as the rj11 phone jack socket.

if that was the case i dont think i would require any adsl filters for phones etc. as the iplate negates the need for any in the house? and then i could run a hi-speed modem cable direct from the master socket to the router. this would simplify my cabling even further.

what do you think?
