Swap SD box for a HD box
I'm happy with my cable package price i don't want to start another 12month contract but would like hd box. Can i just buy on from ebay and swap them over? I notice on the virgin site they have a £20 quickstart offer. Do have this will i have to update my contract? I only have the M service not M+.

It shouldn't as you are not adding a service, but BenMcr would be best to answer this to be sure.
P.s. Do NOT buy Virgin Media boxes on eBay, it will just be a doorstop!

Shouldn't EBay ban these auctions, cannot be hard to flag them up as illegal products!

They are not illegal, VM could I suppose get ebay to stop the sales but the time & effort to do so for something that doesn't work anyway probably makes it all a low priority.

Don't VM own the boxes and we just rent them, surely if you sell them it must be illegal

Not really as the box is supplied to the person (hence not stolen) the user should return the box as per the civil contract.. So as mentioned in other threads the word stolen is incorrect.
VM can claim the boxes back (but instead just tend to claim back the boxes value) and could stop the auctions. Anyone though selling the box could be open to civil proceedings but I doubt criminal proceedings. VM I doubt will ever try to stop the auctions as the time/effort outway the recovery value for a non-working box.
Moot point though as the box won't work and those ignorant to buy the box will soon learn that VM is the only supplier..

Re: Swap SD box for a HD box
If I rent my car to my friend and say I need it back after 12months, then he puts it on ebay/gives it away then its stolen, thats how I look at the vm situation

Re: Swap SD box for a HD box
You sure? The fact that you gave him the car to use for 12 months negates the criminal act of theft. You'd probably only have civil action against him and the person buying the car could get him done for fraud.
The stolen and "receiving stolen goods" was recently covered in this thread
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11...ters-59-a.html
Selling something you do not own might be fraud but not necessarily theft

Re: Swap SD box for a HD box
Illegal to sell yes as you're committing fraud (as you have no rights to sell the item but it doesn't mean it's been stolen) which then begs the question why ebay has them for sale, also there's the claims that it'll work which again makes it fraud..
Personally I'd love to know the answer as to what the full legality there is especially when the item isn't claimed back by VM (hence it's not always illegal or stolen) but I think that's a whole other thread one which would be full of arguments

I am in the same boat, only difference I am upgrading from a V+ to TiVo, don't think it will invoke the need for a new contract though.
