IP confusion!
hi
I'm stuck for ideas with this problem.
My IP address is showing as being non-UK (Polish!) which mean I can't access certain UK based websites (iplayer etc). I've tried
cmd
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
but still it's a Polish address showing..... strangely different IP checkers show the correct UK address others the Non-UK one (which seems to be taking precedent)
Any help, answers or suggestions?
Cheers
twa

Re: IP confusion!
are you on VM? if so open this link and check your IP http://tools.virginmedia.com/
check IPs - http://www.ipvoid.com/
have you got any protection install and running on your system anti virus and firewall?

Re: IP confusion!
Hi thanks for the links.
Yes I'm with VM, using Avast AV and PCTools firewall
http://tools.virginmedia.com/ shows the UK IP
http://www.123myip.co.uk/ shows a Polish IP which is the one sites like BBc are recognising

Re: IP confusion!
just opened that second link and it shows my IP not sure why its showing a polish one for you I'm leaning towards your system being infected. download and install advanced system protector - update it and scan your system.

Re: IP confusion!
Use http://www.ripe.net and do a search in the Ripe database for the IP addresses you are seeing. They will tell you who owns the addresses. It will be NTL for the UK one.

Re: IP confusion!
make sure you update the database before you run the scanner. i can't remember whether it automatically updates after installing, you might have to hit the update link. note the download of updates is fairly quick but updating them may take a little while, don't be alarmed just let it do its thing then scan. scanners quick.

if the scanner finds bugs and you've removed them, power down the modem.. double check all your settings and firewall rules then power up and check the IP.

Re: IP confusion!
Looking at your IP it seems that you;re going through a proxy, check your browser settings
Quote:
The Real IP Address is: 80.195.xxx.xxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.cable.virginmedia.com
The Proxy Server IP Address is: 80.239.xxx.xxx
xxxxxxxxx.opera-mini.net

Re: IP confusion!
Opera provide a Turbo service, which I think acts as a proxy, downloading the pages to their server and compressing them before sending them to the client. Useful for low bandwidth mobile users, but not so much for broadband cable. It also confuses sites who want to know which country you're in.
If you're using Opera, try turning off the Turbo function. Or try a different browser.

Re: IP confusion!
Thanks guys,
Spotted the Norway thing using the link from arcimedes...
I don't have any proxies set up, well none I'm aware of... running 4 other laptops and several wireless devices on this network all of them are ok.
At work just now but will check further when I get home.
Thanks again

Re: IP confusion!
It looks like your browser is using the proxy (could be an add-on)
