Assuming you are using windows 7, go to your network connection (control panel should get you there). Select the network connection properties, the the TCP/IP properties, from whcih you can assign a specific address.

Re: how do i change my computers ip address?
In your command prompt do the following and cut/paste the results here becasue by the sound of it you don;t need to change your IP.. what you do though need is the gateway address (which will be your router address) given by the following command

Once you have changed to a static address and clicked ok you need to unplug router and modem about 30 seconds should be fine, reconnect both and just wait and it should start and connect to internet again. Give the windows about 5 minutes to connect though.

Re: how do i change my computers ip address?
Changing from a dynamic to a static should have no effect via a router as long as you have the correct details for the router.. But if the OP wants to flash the router then the dynamic should still work..

to access your router you would normally type 192.168.1.1 in the web address of internet browser, depends on make of router but works on majority, you dont need to change ip address of pc to access router config.

There is a small windows program called Tftp, if you google and download, it opens as a window, much easier to use than the dos version built in, all you do is type in router ip address, password "leave Blank" and firmware file and this will flash router for you, just unplug router then reboot and hit ok button and firmware will flash. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...ash#TFTP_tools

Re: how do i change my computers ip address?
When you have internet connection what does the IPCONFIG /ALL command give you?? (you're behind a router so it won't give your external IP so safe to post)
I ask because the GATEWAY address there should be the IP address of your router and that should be the only address you need to reflash your router via a utility like Tftp or similar

Re: how do i change my computers ip address?
Right heres the probs, im on virgin using the dir 615 D4 - i want to carry out dd - wrt but i do as requested and i change my computers ip address i use my external ip address but the computer then says i have no dhcp and says the network is an unidentified network.
I am thinking is it best just to invest in a new router or what, i have 50 meg speeds on the modem generally but when i connect their crappy router it drops to 10 meg, is it worth flashing the router or just investing in a new one as being hard wired is ok to a degree

Re: how do i change my computers ip address?
You dont need to touch the ip address of the pc if you are flashing the router, the router assigns an address automatically. What you need to do is flash the firmware on the router and make sure that is working ok after the flash, after its ok it will automatically assign an ip address for the pc, once that is done and you can get onto the internet then go into the network settings and change to a static address of your choice. You also need to make sure you follow the instructions in the post on DD-WRT as you are flashing twice not once to install new firmware.
