internet settings

Okay so I put my new virginmobile sim in my phone and everything was working fine except when I tried to connect to the internet it seemed really slow and sometimes would load pages, sometimes not. I phoned customer services and explained that I was previously with orange and they said the issue is probably conflicting internet settings. They said they would send me a text with install instructions for correct settings. Anyway I never received this so went into my settings and saw that there was indeed 3 settings.

1 virgin internet
1 virgin mms
1 orange internet

I deleted my orange internet settings and then found that internet was not loading at all now. So I went to virginmobile site and found details on settings for accessing internet. I checked these with my virgin settings and they differed in that proxy was off for virgin internet on my phone but it says it should be on. There was no way to delete my existing virgin profiles on my phone so I followed the guide on virginmobile site to add a new profile with the settings they specify, proxy on, port 193, etc, etc.

The internet now works but again seems quite slow. Im not sure if this is because ive been spoilt with having broadband on my pc and just need to realise phone surfing is slower. Or whether its my phone slowing things down. I also have 3 profiles in my internet settings now, the 2 by default and the 1 I added so maybe this is causing conflict. I have no idea if this is the best it gets on my phone or whether my settings are correct.

Re: internet settings

Well it seems like a simple clearing of cache and cookies on my mobile solved the problem. If anyone else is experiencing slow speeds try this.

However whilst browsing is at a good speed a new issue is downloads. I thought that I could download music and ringtones and videos and games to my mobile but this doesnt seem to be the case. The speed is incredibly slow for downloading and so far I have only been able to download simple pictures. How on earth are people downloading music onto their mobiles.

Re: internet settings

you fail to mention which phone you are using or how it connects to the internet ....

GSM (wap) will be very slow (useless for downloading)
GPRS not as slow as wap but still pretty lame (downloading will be very slow)
3G .... pretty good speeds (upto 3.6mb/s) and should be able to download music ringtones etc pretty quickly
HSDPA (enhanced 3G) very fast (upto 7.2mb/s) the dogs b*****ks

it really all depends on what connection your phone supports (and having the right settings)
