weird dell 9100 inspiron laptop problem?

Hello all,

If anyone can shed any light on this problem i'm having with this laptop.
Basically it runs only XP sp1. It wont run SP2 or SP3, Ubuntu, Win98 etc.
If I try to update to the later service packs I get a corrupt display. This also happens when I have tried updating the intel chipset driver.

I have checked everything from memory, hard drive to the graphics card etc (changed it as it is a seperate card). Tried different drivers, loading up in different order, tried XP sp2 cd (loaded fine and run until after reboot).

I really like this laptop for general use as it is a good workhorse and still pretty quick so don't want to bin it. It will load XP sp3 in virtual machine ok as well, but the lack of updates to SP3 generally means I can't update or use some software now like Zune or IE8 etc.

Tried a graphics card driver update, and then installing SP3?

Check for a bios upgrade.

Bios is A06 so is the newest one.
Tried graphics card and catalyst before XP sp3 but still same problem.

Driving me potty, but luckily have spare drive and caddy to try out new idea's.
