Which Dongle?

Hi everyone,
I think I've posted in the right section,if not, mods please move.On the 18th of this month I'm getting the full package from Virgin,at the time of installation my hub will be wired, but early next year I'll be moving my setup to another room and will be going wireless. So my question is,which is the best dongle to go with the Virgin media Hub.I am running Vista Home 64 bit,and I live in a bungalow(not sure if that makes a difference)I believe the hub is made by Netgear? So maybe a netgear dongle?Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Which Dongle?

I guess you mean a USB one?

VM can provide one, but I don't know what it'll cost

That would cost £99 for a 2nd point.

Yes that's correct.I think VM charge £30.Does that seem steep or average price? Is it any good?Anyone using a USB dongle?

Thanks for the reply Hom3r

That seems steep, but what do I know.Isn't it just a matter of a length of cable that is run from the entry box to the hub?How hard is it to do it yourself?

Thanks for the info btw.

Re: Which Dongle?

Hey trublue, i know this doesn`t really answer your question about the dongle but have you thought about getting a long patch lead to go from the router to where you going to move your gear to?
I myself have several rooms wired up with various lenghs of Cat5e cable (some even just ran under the carpet around the room).
Maybe an option to think about, especially if you can get under the floor.

Thanks for that, but unfortunately I have no idea of what a long patch is.But fitting it will be easy,as I live in a bungalow and I already have conduit behind my plaster in the room that I would be moving in to.

It`s basically just a ready made up long lead which goes from the router to your computer. Here`s a 30M one sold at Amazon, but they do them in various lengths.

Re: Which Dongle?

It should also be more reliable, and faster, than wireless.

Another little tip (but sshh don`t tell anyone ). What i did with one which wouldn`t fit though a hole was just cut it in half, push the open ends through (with nothing connected of course) then use some 5A terminal block (or tape) to reconnect the colours like for like. Works perfect...

It is done by a qualified engineer and all power levels are checked and it is pretty much a standard type of price within the industry.

All installations are subsdised by your subscription but any other work has to be paid at the going rate.

Re: Which Dongle?

I have seen similar in my local Pound store, not that I would even bother with something that cheap.
