I have 50M internet with Virgin Media i have a netgear router but i can only receive 20M through my wireless box. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i can do myself to change this?

Welcome to the forum

I presume you have a G class router, what you need is an N class router which offers higher wifi speeds, only other option is to go wired.

Just to add (although it might be obvious to some), as well as an 'N' router, your wireless receiver (on desktop or laptop) would also need to be 'N'.

I thought g class routers could still transfer at 54Mbps?

just to add my reciever is g class on my laptop but the router is n class and i get approx 40- 45 Mb

My router is an N Netgear router. It is actually the one the Virgin sent me when i opted for the higher speed. I have checked my laptop and also my PC are both on N setting. Virgin have now dispatched a third router fingers crossed that this one will work better than the other 2. Has anyone else suffered with the same problem of not getting 50M through their box?

can you not ask for the d link ,that's the one i use which does offer better performance than the netgear

that is what Virgin are sending out to us, but whether or not it works is another matter. to be honest i am not holding my breath for it to work

mine works just fine as long as it is configured correctly

not really if you are only browsing ,it does however make a big difference for streaming video ,game playing and downloading

Theoretically, they can, in ideal circumstances. However, in practice, G class routers often max out at around 25-30 Mbps..

N class routers tend to come with faster CPUs so can cope with higher speeds. As do Business level G class routers.

Oh OK...thanks for the advice because my dad was planning on upgrading because it would be awesome...I mean I just thought that if 10mb loads a webpage in 4 seconds then 50mb would load a page in like 0.7 seconds...Is that right?

possibly in theory but in practice you probably wouldn't notice the difference ,there are so many factors other than bandwidth that affect page loading like advert content, video content and configuration of your browser
and what would you do with the 3.03 secs saved anyway
