Grandma's house..

I watched this last night at 10pm.

It actually wasn't what I was expecting from Simon Amstell. I am not sure what I was expecting from him, bearing in mind my only experience of him was hearing him take the mickey out of other people, but what I got was a thoroughly enjoyable and quite funny look at how a typical Jewish family deals with things.

I supposed the premise could be called a little narcissistic as it is about the family of a Gay Jewish comedian (played by Simon himself) who has just quit a perfectly good job hosting a quiz show where he was paid good money to take the mickey out of pop stars, but surprisingly, it works well. It's also surprising that although he wrote it, Simon didn't give himself the best lines, and often almost seemed like a background character in the story.

In all, IMO, a good subtle comedy. No real laugh-out-loud one liners (as they often have in US sitcoms), but I think it's all the funnier because it is believable. Something that a lot of sitcoms (both UK and US) aren't.

What did you guys think?

Re: Grandma's house..

I watched it, then apologised to my backside for forcing it to sit there through it!

What a load of complete and utter rubbish - seriously, Simon Amstell should be deeply deeply ashamed of himself for turning out such turgid crap!

Re: Grandma's house..

It took more than 5 minutes to get going, because there were no artificially created situations or throwaway dialogue designed to narrate the story or explain what was happening.

Sticking with it was well worth the effort though. We were alternately laughing and cringing all the way through. And I never thought I'd hear the phrase 'interracial creampie' on mainstream TV. I can only assume that it's so far below the profanity radar that they managed to slip it past the censors.

It kind of reminded me a little of The Royle Family , and yes it did take a while to get going but then it was just funny as hell, i will definitely be watching it next week

Re: Grandma's house..

Amstell has got about as much character as a paper bag, yet I find him entertaining on buzzcocks.
I dont think he should give up his day job, he should stick to what he knows and does well, stand-up.
