DIR-615 D4 - V slow wireless speeds (flashed with DD-WRT)

Hi All,

I recently got the DIR-615 D4 with the VG1.00 software and flashed it with the DD-WRT firmware.

I've been researching and reading various threads (and posting on other sites- DD-WRT and AVForums) for any solution to the wireless issue I have- I notice a few people have had the same.

Wireless connection is slow, but wired is perfect. I had 143111 on my D link and wired was perfect, but wireless was dead slow- sometimes 192.168.1.1 would not even connect wirelessly, but would be fine with wired.

I have flashed it with the newest DD-WRT firmware (14573) and for about 30mins last night all was ok wirelessly with websites. Then went back to being slow. Speedtests varied from 9 Megs to 2.5 Megs (I am on 10Meg connection).
Also during this 30 mins I played Halo 1 online and although the ping was good, the game was laggy- as if the router was still processing? I can't for the life of me think whats goping on! Is it a fault with router - something to do with the 'D4' revision I have??

I also changed channels to 6,9 and 11 and the same issue happened- I am only in 'G' Mode and using WPA2 Personal with TKIP.
I don't think its interference as when I plug in my DIR-524 all goes back to normal (and its on channel 6). Some guys posted on DD-WRT it is the advanced wireless setting you have to change- but never told me them.

Anyone have the D4 version wirelessly working fine? Can you send me settings? Any ideas otherwise?

Cheers!

Re: DIR-615 D4 - V slow wireless speeds (flahed with DD-WRT)

I'm using DD-WRT with 50Mb and get around 40Mb all around the house with zero disconnects. Xbox live plays fine too.

Under Wireless>>>>Advanced i was advised to put CTS protection mode to disable and frame burst to enable.

Re: DIR-615 D4 - V slow wireless speeds (flahed with DD-WRT)

I've never had problems with the wireless speed with any build of DD-WRT that I've used on my DIR-615 D2, including 14311 and 14537. I have had some other minor issues though.

Here are a few advanced wireless settings I've changed that give me good performance:

CTS Protection Mode - Disabled
Frame Burst - Disabled (enabling it can have an adverse affect when multiple wireless devices are connected to the router)
Preamble - Short
Shortslot Override - Short

The times I have had speed issues is when the UBR we're on is overloaded in the evening and the speed drops from 9+ MB to around 1 MB. Unfortunately this happens most nights, but VM don't see it as enough of a problem to do anything about it.

Re: DIR-615 D4 - V slow wireless speeds (flahed with DD-WRT)

yo

went with the settings from mjpartyboy-

CTS Protection Mode - Disabled
Frame Burst - Disabled (enabling it can have an adverse affect when multiple wireless devices are connected to the router)
Preamble - Short
Shortslot Override - Short

And all seems well!! At first gaming would lag but websites were quick (from my 10 Meg connection) then couldn't access 192.168.1.1 but rebooted router and all seems well! So cheers!

Also I enabled the logging function just to see what was going on according to-

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...ng_with_DD-WRT

but cannot locate the '/tmp/var/log/messages' folder anywhere on my C:drive?

Anyway for now I'm happy- will report back to see if this thing stays stable!

Cheers

try WPA1 it may be a compatability issue.
also test no encryption.

Don't forget to save and then apply settings when the save has finished (you need to do this on each page after you've made any changes to ensure the router stores and applies them properly). It might be worth trying different combinations of advanced wireless settings to see what performs best for your set-up.

I use WPA2 AES encryption and Xbox Live, PS3 Network, Wii online, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and HTC Desire work fine over wireless (I'm also on VM L broadband).

I have set DD-WRT to reboot the router at 5am everyday to ensure all memory leaks, etc, are cleared. I'm not bothered about setting any records for router up-time and this doesn't affect the daily traffic counter.

Re: DIR-615 D4 - V slow wireless speeds (flashed with DD-WRT)

Very weird- tried both AES(WPA2) and no encryption- AES was better at gaming than no encryption! Game was laggy on no encryption more than with AES. Also put beacon thing to 50. Game was better but websites took double clicks to get to- (seen that in your posts mjpartyboy). Anyway still can't find where the logs are after enabling logging just to see whats going on. Time for the trusty DIR-524 to return and will monitor for new firmware that might help- I really think now its physically faulty!
Cheers guys!

Re: DIR-615 D4 - V slow wireless speeds (flashed with DD-WRT)

I'm running mostly stable with build 14537 on my D2, but it does have issues sometimes with some links requiring more than one click to open. Xbox Live is fine when this is happening though.

Personally I just think the DIR-615 isn't a very good router in general, especially as different firmware doesn't seem to make much difference to its performance (stock, D-Link, DD-WRT).

I think you're right mjpartyboy- time to start looking for another router! £15 down the drain! Ah well....

Re: DIR-615 D4 - V slow wireless speeds (flashed with DD-WRT)

Ok success- BUT I put the D-link firmware on from the D-link website (V4.11) from the Emergency room. Now all is well and am getting good wireless speed and no lag in games and no drop outs! My popcorn hour and my NAS connect as well!

Weird- maybe I'll give DD-WRT another go later on though.

Cheers people for the help!

Unplug the power cable from the router and then press and hold down the reset button on the back of the router, you will need to use a thin object to get to the reset button.

Keep holding the reset button down while you plug the power back in. You can release the reset button after several seconds and you'll know your in the ER because the power light on the front of the router will be flashing amber and when you connect to the router you're presented with a minimalist screen that looks nothing like D-Link's or DD-WRT's admin pages.

I think the ER has to be accessed at http://192.168.0.1, so try this if the usual IP address you use doesn't work (for example, DD-WRT uses http://192.168.1.1).

Try setting your machine's IP to 192.168.0.3 and then try connecting to 192.168.0.1. Failing that, try your machine with 192.168.1.3 and connecting to 192.168.1.1.
