Cable modem vpn IT problem to Router.

Hi,
I have a Cable modem (Business 2020, Model number 08004EU). This is connected through to my newly purchased Draytek Vigor 2820VN router. I have set the routers IP as 192.168.0.254. The modem I beleive is 192.168.0.1.

I have set up a no-ip.org account and added this to the Applications > Dynamic DNS settings in the router.

As soon as I force a DNS update from the router my no-ip.org account changes from the correct IP address 88.X.X etc to 192.168.0.2

I also notice that the WAN2 settings on the router say the internal address and not the correct expernal IP address

How can I allow the modem to pass the external WAN side IP address through to the router? I would like to use the VPN facility on this router to access my office but can't connect because the router doesn't seem to be able to 'get' the correct IP from the modem. Is there a method to forward the IP from the modem to the router?

Sounds to me like your VM Business modem is set up as a Gateway, Kymmy will have more of a clue than me on this, if this is the case then the router is correctly identifying the IP address on the WAN port and setting that as the No-IP IP address

yes, that is what I thought. So, hopefully the router is doing as it should and now all I need to do is change the business modem to allow the correct IP through. Easy when you know how

Pity I don't know how or even if it can be done?

Sounds like you need to set the modem to Bridged mode and the router wan port to dhcp. This will allow the router to gain the external IP and therefore allow you to use no-ip. As to how you set the modem to bridged mode I haven't a clue. Hopefully someone will be along to tell you how or you could just try setting the router to dhcp and see if it gets an internet type ip rather than use 192.168.0.xxx.

Graham's correct in that the business modems are set up as routers. The only way past that is to get it converted to a fixed IP (or 5) unless you're on 20Mb then the fixed IP's are not available..

You could though ring up the business support team and ask them to NO NAT the modem (no idea if they'll do that or not), that way it'll act like a residential modem (dynamic IP) and your router will then get a proper WAN IP.
