Virgin 50mb - 49.5mb wired, 24mb wireless (next to router),8mb wireless (upstairs) :(

is there any way I can make this faster? I have WPA2 set up, after messing about with the channels I find that channel 1 is the fastest (probably because most my neighbours have channel 6). My router also allows me to choose an "extension channel", which it automatically selects as 5

so, any idea how to make the wireless faster? I am using a macbook pro 13inch 2009, that has a wireless N wifi card. Virgin gave their own router, a dlink dir-615. It has 2 antenna's and costs about £30. I am currently using my own router, a belkin F5D8232-4 which has 3 antenna's... so surely this should be faster? I have tried the dlink router, and speeds are worse.

What can i do to increase wireless speed?

thanks

Could this be a half-duplex issue?

Over wireless? No.

OP - Try Channel 11 or 13 if usable.

I am sure there is a program you can run and it tells you what channel are currently been used.

Wireless will all most give you lower speeds due to signal having to travel and also in some older house there is lead between floor which will slow the signal down.

Some new houses have plaster board with a silver backing to help with heat but does a great job stopping mobile and wireless signals .

Have you set the router to "n" only?

there's no option for N only, and I need the G for my iphone. Wireless mode in router config is 11b + g + n

and yep am on channel 13, majority of neighbours have 6. I now get around 20mb

If you want wired speeds without running cable everywhere try homeplugs

The list of things that could be affecting your speed is huge, i get a poor signal in my kitchen i think this is due to the microwave blocking the radio waves, also get poor signal in bedroom due to DECT phone using 2.4Ghz

The router can only do g or n, it can't do both at the same time, so if anything g connects to the router everything falls to g speeds. The way to test this is tell your router to do n only

TBH you'll need a very good wireless router indeed to get the full 50Mbit all over your house.

I am currently looking at the Linksys WRT610N. Overclockers.co.uk have an excellent deal on at the moment - and £20 cashback if bought before end of April:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...source=froogle

The best feature I believe is that you can have your N devices running on the 5GHz spectrum and G devices running on the 2.4GHz spectrum. Stops the G devices slowing down the N devices and also 5GHz is in scarce use so plenty of spare room for your signal to spread it's legs

Review I read shows over 100Mbit/sec (just) performance on the Wireless-N 50 feet away!

That's pretty annoying - my Father connects wirelessly using his laptop all day everyday (Home Worker) - no wonder I neevr get anywhere near 5-6MB Down on my N PC!

802.11G has a max data throughput of around 25mbps, if you want to go faster then you'll need N i'd go 5ghz N as you have more channels with less interference.

Well not to sound to smug, jb7 - just go to a wired network, throw out the wireless rubbish . It will give you less hassle is setting up a whole network, as you posted it will give you a near full internet speed for what you're paying - wouldn't you like that jb7? Oh not forgetting kicking over the lurking freeloaders that maybe using your net connection on wireless while you're not looking.

For me anything wireless(modern) is just plain junk, really a whole idea for printing wasteful money other than anything pre microprocessor is fine like ham radio or CB which works great.

I think it's the encryption that slows it down. If you turn that off you'll be right back to 49Mbs on wireless.... but.... obviously nobody (including me) is going to recommend that! Do it as a test (but don't leave it like it).
