Which ROUTER?

I am not happy with the D-Link DIR-615 router provided by Virgin. I have had a replacement and also tried numerous config settings with no joy.

I have decided to purchase my own but need advise on which to get. After looking through various posts the following are recommended by various members on this forum:

Edimax BR650N router (used by Moldova - regular poster - VM techy)
CISCO WRT610N (??)
NETGEAR WNR2000 (widely recommended but also not recommended by some!)

Can anyone share there experiences with these or any other routers? The main issues I want to avoid is problems assigning IP's and terrible gaming lag. The DIR-615 prevents me connecting on some devices (mainly XP/older stuff - my new Vista laptop never has a problem connecting but can never reach full speed through router but consistant good speed through modem)

Re: Which ROUTER???

From a non tecky perspective, I,ve tried all the vm supplied routers,

The Netgear WNR2000 was good on a wired connection, was good gaming wise, but the wireless performance was far from brilliant, with frequent drop outs.

The D-Link Dir 615, I thought was a heap of junk, but the wireless performance was very good, and easily the best out of a bad lot (if wireless is your bag)

I have a Linksys WRT610N, (xbox friendly) and its pretty good at most things, the only thing I,m not so keen on is the limited Qos functionality, but its easy to use.

(the other concern was that it got hacked within 24 hours of setting it up, probably my fault because I didn't change the default router login username and password), One hard reset later and normal service was resumed.

I get a good wireless signal all round the home, even after turning the broadcast power down to medium, but from a wired gaming perspective I think the netgear might have it beat.

Like I mentioned, I,m no tecky just an average Jo Shmo, drifting through life gaining just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

Re: Which ROUTER???

Well i got the WNR2000 from Argos on special price of £49.99 and i have to say its a damn sight better than the DLink 615.

I can download 3+ files at the same time without my connection keeling over.

I get a more constant speed while downloading where the Dlink would fling around from 2.7mb/s to 4.8mb/s the Neatgear usually gives me a 4.8 - 5.6mb without fluctuating to much.

Wireless on the Netgear doesnt hang from time to time where it did on the Dlink.

Firmware on the Netgear isnt slow and sluggish to update settings when changed like on the Dlink....

And these are just some things i can think of.

There was a flaw with the WNR2000 firmware but it has been sorted in recient update on firmware i was reading about it. I have been connected now constantly since 27th on Wireless apart from 1 reboot of my system due to windows updates and all seems fine.

There was a problem with previous version of firmware but has been sorted in latest version. I have been connected almost constant since 27th when i bought the router around 10am and apart from 1 reboot for windows updates connection has been fine... This is the kind of thing i get wirelessly...

Re: Which ROUTER???

Pabscars well for a long time my upload speed was all over the place usually around 1.35mb and VM stated they couldnt see any problems what so ever and were not oversubscribed. YET!! they did some upgrade work to the network in Swansea on the 25th and since Upload has been perfect.

Re: Which ROUTER???

Cheers Chris your posts are always helpful. I should probably wait for more replies but the thread has been moved and probably won't be seen by Virgin customers as I initially wanted. I think I will go and get a WNR2000 right now
