netgear wgr614v9 help needed

just installed the wgr614v9, followed the on-screen instructions and ended up with my old ethernet cable running from the new router to my laptop and the new ethernet running from the modem to the router. When i remove the old lead from the laptop i lose internet connection. Any ideas on what i've done wrong? Thanks in advance
