Wireless Electricity Demonstrated

Very interesting:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8165928.stm

I'm sure there will be all sorts of health scares raised about it if ever introduced...

If you have a mains rechargable toothbrush then you;ve already got the technology It's nothing new apart from the distance

Re: Wireless Electricity Demonstrated

I dunno how far they've come yet with making it efficient (i.e alot of it gets wasted) but i think it's great! A bit concerned how safe it would be though, standing by it...

So does this development mean people with main rechargeable toothbrushes will be able to clean their teeth anywhere then? Also will I be able to run all our electrical appliances on my next door neighbour's bill?

Schoolboy maths tells you this is dangerous. Especially in the vicinity of a pacemaker.

Now this is really showing how technologically challenged I am.

How does the power know where to go and what happens to the power that floats around in the air looking for something to work?

My head hurts just thinking about this subject.

Re: Wireless Electricity Demonstrated

Basically as I understand it, there's a coil in a base station emitting a magnetic field, now, a transformer (like how you currently charge your phone) drops the voltage by putting two of these coils within close proximity with one having less winds on the coil than the other - this technology is basically doing the same thing over a larger distance. This theory would require some sort of receiver with a coil in it connected to the device to be charged (or possibly built-in as new tech arrives on the market)

I still feel like I should invest in some headwear to protect my old brain from all the stray electricity that will be leaking out in every direction..

.... and another thing. Surely transmitting power this way is inefficient as some must get wasted?

Anyone got any spare painkillers for my escalating headache?

Re: Wireless Electricity Demonstrated

Yeah, the technology involved has been around for a long time, I think the efficiency is what has made it more likely today. Like you - I'm not sure I like the idea but Electromagnetic radiation (which is basically what it is) is a part of every day life, quite how strong a field these things put out I'm not sure, I guess it must be directional or something.

Re: Wireless Electricity Demonstrated

As I said in my first post most electric toothbrushes use the same technology. Also anything with a transformer inside uses a more basic form..

I think the new aspect to this is designing a field effect that charges irrespective of the orientation of the device

You are indeed absolutely correct. My issue is that the distance from the exciting coil to the receiving one is the problem.

To get any energy worthwile at the receiving end requires a huge amount of power at the exciting end which can affect many other devices in its path.

Re: Wireless Electricity Demonstrated

..............................

I don't have a problem with the transfer of power by the coil system such as is used in my electric toothbrush but I can't believe that true wireless transfer over a distance wouldn't waste power.
