SMTP Problems

Hello. Is anyone else having smtp problems with virginmedia.com?

I'm using Outlook 2007 and this evening I can't send any emails because it says the smtp server doesn't recognise my username/password.

I've rebooted the PC twice and still the same issue. Everything was fine this morning.

Thanks.

Sorry - Just realised this is prbably in the wrong forum - Mod, please can you move it for me

Re: SMTP Problems

Mail just worked OK for me. BUT - I do see, very occasionally, a username/password prompt for the Virgin service.

I put a Wireshark analyser onto this when it happened and there was a reject from the NTL server. If it persists, I cancel out and the problem goes away within a few minutes.

Re: SMTP Problems

Sephiroth - Thanks for your response. It has not been sending email for the last 4 hours that I've been trying. I've tried clicking OK and Cancel and closing down Outlook and rebooting the PC and still no luck.

Re: SMTP Problems

I have three e-mail accounts with different ISPs which means I can test receiving and sending e-mails between any potentially problematic mail services.

I use the Virgin email the least because I don't like the NTLWorld handle! Mt BTInternet.com e-mail service (Yahoo really) has NEVER glitched. My MSN service very rarely glitches other than asking me for username/password quite frequently.

When I investigated this with Wireshark, I couldn't find any server related issue. I think it's AV or firewall stuff running on my system; prolly a McAfee thing - but I can't be bothered with spending the rest of my life sorting this Username/Password thing out. Nobody has solved it.

You, on the other hand, do appear to have your server down if you can't send mail - unless there's something else wrong with your system. I wouldn't expected the UN/PW prompt from the Virgin e-mail server if it was down; but if it was mis-behaving or one of the server support functions was not in a state of grace, then this could happen.

As I said, I just sent myself an e-mail from the Virgin account to the MSN account - no probs.

Re: SMTP Problems

Sephiroth - Thanks for your reply. I have a number of other accounts set up within Outlook aswell and none of them are giving me issues.

I'll test again tomorrow, then log a fault if it's still happening.

Re: SMTP Problems

beanie - I'm still not able to send email because of the smtp server not recognising my username/password. It was fine until yesterday evening.

I was at work the other morning when there were the national issues, so wasn't trying to send mail through Outlook.

Have you called Tech Support for an update on 151 from a Virgin phone or 0845 454 1111 from any other phone.

Just be aware that Outlook is not supported so you will need to know how to access the account settings.

Outlook Express and Windows Mail are supported on a Windows O/S only.

Re: SMTP Problems

Apparently there is a "massive fault" with the smtp server that should be resolved sometime between now and next Tuesday (22nd).

They're going to try to add something to the service status page as it's currently blank

Re: SMTP Problems

And still the problem continues. It must be a really serious issue if it's going to take 4 days to resolve

Re: SMTP Problems

Hello Newbie. You might like to see thread "Email-log-in-issues" posted by me, xian, yesterday. SMTP works now - they obviously fixed it. Very time-wasting for all. Why couldn't they post a message on the website or at Tech Supp freephone? That's what it's for.

Re: SMTP Problems

smtp authentication was/is ok using the webmail portal, you could have continued to use your mail service.

Re: SMTP Problems

That's hardly the point. This is a POP problem. Either SMTP.virginmedia works or it doesn't.
The Web is not the best place for email traffic and some of us would rather not use it. And now we're hijacking Newbie's thread. Sorry.
