routing issues

Folks,

This issue seems to pop up every now again...But is any one aware of routing issues from the UK to France. I have seervers with Ovh and was Ftp files across last nite at 150k on a 20meg connection. Tried again this morning and it was 500k. I havent been traffic managed and im aware of other users on the ovh forums complaining of routing issues. I will perform some tracert later and post them but is there anything going on that you guys know of?

The servers are fine uploading to other servers on the ovh backbone outside of that things are crawling..... Anyone shed any light?

Re: routing issues

Given that other people are complaining and that it's fine on the OVH network but broken off the OVH network it suggests that OVH are at fault.

Re: routing issues

Yes that is true for torrents but the fact remains that it has been fine for a while then suddenly drops out, works again and then drops out again. But I will check the tracerts and see who is at fault. As virgin have a history of poor routing which has caused issues in the past.

Re: routing issues

I see - you mentioned that it was outside the OVH network things were broken which sounded like it was to everywhere not just Virgin.

Re: routing issues

Since i have virgin at home it is whatever way vigin are routing from Belfast to France. I have done numerous speed tests on the server on various different servers located in the uk. The speed test result on the london server seems ok but testing on the dublin and the new derry server on speedtest.net are terrible.

I relaise speed tests can be terribly inaccurate but it does point to some sort of routing issues when the traffic leaves the ovh network and enters the VM network. So whatever transits etc they are using is pretty poor.

Are these other users on Virgin broadband?

It could be a myriad of other issues apart from routing, and yes, you really do need to perform a few tracerts, ideally one when the connection is good, and one where the connection is bad. Compare the routing between the two, and also any significant increases in latency between hops.

If the speed is bad at night and not in the day could it be congestion on your UBR at specific to the time of the day.

Re: routing issues

will do the tracert later but besides that the speed tests show there is an issue. And yes other issues who have complaioned are virgin media users.

My Ubr itself is fine, Its not oversubscribed. i normally get 20 meg so I cant fault virgin with that howvere when the the data is in transit from france to the Uk something is happening. But I will update the post later with some tracert results.
