Poor upload speed

Hi guys,

I have been experiencing poor upload speeds since I took out my VM service. Was on 10meg and getting 128K upload, now on 2meg service and still getting the same-ish upload speed. Meant to be getting 256K upload on the 2meg service! What could be causing this?

Have you tried rebooting the modem?

Re: Poor upload speed

Yes, it didn't make any difference. When I was on 10meg, I was still getting the same uplaod speed of around 80-130K...

The upstream channel in your area may be saturated. Try posting on the newsgroups and someone can check for you.

Re: Poor upload speed

Not sure its related but I've got the same speeds as you. I got STM'd this morning after a large download. Fair enough.

But now I am down to 128mb on uploads. Its very consistent, I've checked it throughout the day. I have a VOIP phone and this upload speed makes it impossible to use the phone properly and do anything on the internet at the same time.

This is not on. I'm on 10Mb serviice and according to Virgins own STM page there should be no reduction in uploads during the day. Are they breaking their own terms?

This is extremely unlikely, upstream congestion is basically unheard of now thanks to the rubbish upstream levels provisioned to us

Now why didn't that thought come to mind?

I'm on 2MB so I am not being STM'ed by the look of my download speed. I had the same upload speed of ~120 even when I was not being STM'ed on 10meg!

Do you not have QoS on your voip router/adapter? VoiP only needs 64kbps so should be fine on 128k if you have QoS. The other thing you could do is switch to the G729 codec, which uses 8kpbs but as with G711 if you do not have QoS, this may also struggle if you are using the internet simultaneously.
