Upgrade from 20 to 50Mb question
Hi,
I'm having my 20Mb connection upgraded to 50Mb this friday.
My question is, do I actually need VM to come install the modem etc.
Can I not just do this myself?
I was sent a new Modem and the rubbish 54g Netgear router a few weeks
ago, and have installed these myself, and registered the new modem with VM.
All works fine, but I wondered do I really need them to visit and install a new
modem and router, what exactly are they doing that I can't do myself?
The reason I ask is, it means I have to take the morning off work, which at the moment is a real pain.
I did call customer support to ask, but I got told rather abruptly, that
they HAVE to do it, with no explanation as to why.

Re: Upgrade from 20 to 50Mb question
It has to be installed by an engineer and the is no option for a self install, ask for a Saturday install if that is more convenient.

Re: Upgrade from 20 to 50Mb question
Moldova - Thanks for your reply, can you elaborate on why it has to be done by an engineer specifically?Sadly I work 7 days a week, and I'm on call also, which means any visits to my homerequire a lot of time juggling on my part. Hence my wish to do a self install.

Re: Upgrade from 20 to 50Mb question
They say that the engineer must install the equipment to ensure that it works properly and that you are getting the required speeds.
It is similar to the V+ set top box installation which has to be a manned install which again is chargeable.

Re: Upgrade from 20 to 50Mb question
main reason we install 50 meg, is,
to get a correct hit, and phone install supprt to make sure account is set up
need to check they have locked on docsis 1, 2 and 3
snr and power output is in tollerance, (if not need cables sorting)
and to show you on the virgin (password protected) site that is reaches 50 meg
install speed software if not vista
we are given 1 hour to sort this, it can become a pain in the arse, and sometime its is not set up or network have to sort dp or headend problems.
in all it can get a bit more complicated than ust sending a modem out.
mainly its proof to you that 50 does actually work and that ur happy
50 MEG ROCKS (it really does work )

Re: Upgrade from 20 to 50Mb question
no im not from that area, but if they are the same as us it should be a virgin employee (in house technician), and not a contracted installer (turd)

Re: Upgrade from 20 to 50Mb question
well if by the slimest chance your not, then its not his fault and will get his principle tech who has more time to sort things like that...
if it is new in the area then ther may be teething problems...
