I was taught to believe the following with regards to broadband installation.
The wireless router should be plugged into the main BT point in the house using a splitter.
All other telephone points, sky boxes, faxes etc should also have splitters.
The other day I came across the following scenario.
New BT line installed. 1 point downstairs. Extension upstairs both professionally installed by a BT engineer. Reason for new line - Broadband.
On arrival I discover downstairs point (which I presume to be the main point) has a phone plugged in with no splitter. Upstairs point has just a phone lead plugged in (again no splitter) and on following the lead is taped along the floor around walls and doors into a room about 10 feet away where the other end has then been plugged into a splitter this has then been plugged into another splitter which has the adsl line into one point then a phone point which has then been taped all around the room into a fax machine. Excess cable (which there is a lot of ) has then been just tied up!! - The client was charged nearly £200 for this I quote "home network" to be installed!
Im still learning the ropes with all things installing so forgive me for my ignorance but this isnt right surely? - Unfortunately the person who done this is not contactable anymore but am I right and what they have done is wrong?
Any advice however precise or in laymans terms would be appreciated.
It's entirely possible to use an NTE5 faceplate, and then split extensions off that - that's what I did, and it worked fine. Then just run a cable to the modem. Failing that, you just put splitters on every end device - it's basically the same deal.
That sounds like a total botched job. Check the NTE5 first though - is it a plain face plate, or a splitter?
All BT points in the house can have BB splitters attached to them it doesn't have to be the main box as it makes no difference apart from you might have a better connection on the main box but very minimal (this is due to contention on the wire i.e the longer the wire the weaker the signal) that you wont even notice the difference unless your a geek lol
