Hey all,
I've just moved into my girlfriend's house, she's been getting Virgin Media cable broadband to an XP desktop downstairs for a while now, and I want to get to my Vista PC that I've brought to the house upstairs. She's got an NTL cable connection in the wall downstairs that leads the cable to her Virgin Media supplied modem. No idea what model it is but it says its a Foxconn modem on the bottom. I did find a pic of it on
Google though. And I've just bought a wireless router off eBay to send the net upstairs. It's a Micradigital F5D7230uk4-E. It has 4 LAN ports in the back of it as well as the wireless function. Just in case it helps, here's the
item on eBay. Also,
here it is on the Micra digital web site.
So what I've done at this stage is install it as per the instruction manual and common sense. (it came without a CD btw). I unplugged the ethernet cable from my Virgin modem that connects to the XP computer downstairs, and using the new supplied ethernet cable from Micradigital, plugged it in to the WAN port in the back of the Micradigital router and into the ethernet port of the Virgin modem. Then I re-connected the ethernet cable that connects to the XP computer into LAN port 1 of the Micradigital router. Then I plugged the power supply into the back of the Micradigital router.
This made the Power, WLAN, WAN and LAN1 lights show up on the front of the router. But not the Internet light.
I didn't realise this and went upstairs to my Vista computer to see if it was all working. I found the network (it was unsecured) and I connected to it. From what little I know about networking that meant that the LAN was working fine, but I could go no further. I couldn't connect to the Internet and Vista's network solution finder-thingy didn't have a working solution for it. Then after that I came downstairs and made sure the internet itself was actually working by taking the router out of the equation. Which it obviously does, as I'm here typing.
After this I found a help document on the Micradigital web site (
here if you want to have a look), which told me to enter an IP address (192.168.2.1) into my browser and configure the router WEP security. Which I did.
But this hasn't solved a thing.
So basically I'm stuck. Someone help please.
I need the internet for Uni work.. siiigh
