Router advice
Hiya all we currently use a belkin 54g router for our wireless BB and it worked fine when i was using the Xbox and Pc upstairs connected to it.
But since my wife got a laptop i find the net is slower to use on both devices?
So my question is do i need to upgrade router?
If so what to? G+, N, N+ ?
thanx

Re: Router advice
Before you start upgrading the router, what speed BB have you got? If you have a 2MB VM connection, upgrading the router isn't going to make any difference.

Re: Router advice
You'd be okay with your current G router although if you were to upgrade to get more range then it's a N your after.

Re: Router advice
Belkins arent that good really...Try a netgear or linksys as they are better quality imo.

Re: Router advice
If you are now sharing a connection between two computers, and both are in use at the same time , then inevitably each will only get a share of the total bandwidth available. You don't get 2x 10meg speeds by having 2 computers connected to a router.
However, if only the laptop, or only the computer, or only the xbox is in use, with the others doing nothing, then that should still be able to get the full speed. If you are not seeing a good speed in such circumstances, then look at the router. Do you have current firmware for it?

Re: Router advice
Anything faster than standard 'G' speeds relies on everything on the network being up to spec.
Eg, if you put an N router with the G adaptors, it will still work, but at G speeds.
Also a G router should be able to max out a 10mb broadband link.
You mention the PC & XBox have G adaptors, but what does the laptop have? If it's only a B adaptor it could be dragging down the speed of the whole wireless.

Re: Router advice
Hiya thanx guys for replying,
Yeah my set up is currently
Wireless G router in front room.
Laptop with built in wireless?(not sure what spec? )
Pc upstairs with G network adaptor
Xbox upstairs with wireless G adaptor
Its not really a speed issue just when the laptop and Pc are connected at same time the router sometimes drops out and the page loading hangs?

Re: Router advice
Yeah I'm also looking to upgrade my router and wasn't sure whether to fork out a bit more cash to have n speeds. I have a Netgear WGR614v6 with a PC and Xbox 360 wired to it and another desktop and laptop connecting using wireless.
Lately my router keeps disconnecting everyone from the network so I think it's time for an upgrade.

Re: Router advice
Open up network connections and it should tell you what the network card is - if it's not obvious from the name, google should tell you whether it's b, g or n.
If the connection is dropping at the router, but not on the modem, the router CPU may be getting swamped. In which case a better router may help.
