need help please guys
right guys....I have just bought two e-system notebooks and a netgear rangemax router...what I want to do is to install the router on my desktop...which I still want hard wired...and then connect the two laptops wirelessly...But I have not got a clue what to do...any help or a link to a tutorial on how to set it all up would be greatly appreciated....remember that you dealing with a complete novice when it comes to networking...

Re: need help please guys
I think there are some guides kicking around here - they won't be specific to you new Rangmax but will give you a fair idea. I think they might be in the articles section...

Re: need help please guys
a basic setup would be:
1)cable from modem into the dsl connection on router
2)rj45 cable from 1 of the 4 network ports on the router into the back of your main computer.
3)then switch off both router and modem wait for about 20 secs then switch on in following order.
first switch modem on wait till the steady light stops flashing, then switch router on this should give you a connection to the wired pc,
then try to connect via wireless if you can then it's ok you just need to setup your network security via the router settings in the instruction manual.

Re: need help please guys
I cannot do it til friday afternoon as the laptops are going to be a surprise for the kids at christmas...I am going to have to lie and tell the kids that virgin have been round and fitted a modem booster so as they don't wonder what the router is...i am assuming that once i have set the router up i will have to leave it there..and not be able to diconnect it and carry on just using the normal modem til xmas....and then i am going to have to set the laptops up...hope that is easy to do...as i am a networking newbie...

ok let's not go too far, i'm just offering to help 1 person that might need some help on xmas day when there might not be too many people around to help, and let's be honest if you buy something for xmas and then can't use it there is nothing more fustrating (don't you remember being a kid and getting a toy you really want to play with??? then finding out it's got no batteries i do!) anyway the offer is there to the op only and don't worry mod's it's in safe hand's if you want a day off
