EX Directory

I cant seem to get this sorted and its doing my head in.

My number should be ex directory and i was told it wouldnt show up on the end of the people i call, and its even in my contract as being ex directory. When i ring the number shows up, i rang virgin and told them and they claim i have to dial 141 at the beginning of every call lol.

I told them this shouldnt be the case and they r as helpful as a chocolate fireguard. Any ideas?

Re: EX Directory

Ex-directory just means that your number isn't published in phone books or available by web lookups.

Stopping your number being transmitted via caller-id when you make a call is an entirely different thing. Just making your number ex-directory will not stop this happening.

Re: EX Directory

Ex-Directory is different to what you are wanting. Ex-Directory means your name and number are not in the phone book or the 118 services

You need to ask for Permanent Number Supression.

err no you are the useless one! VM Customer Care are correct.

As other posters have said ex-directory means you aren't in the 'phone book or available via 118 services.

Call 150 and request automatic number withold, it's free and means your number will not transmit when calling out. I believe there is a code you can put in the reveal your number per call, can't think what it is off the top of my head!

Re: EX Directory

Apologies for hijacking this thread but on a similar vein.

When I try to withhold my number by prefixing the number with 141 on my Virgin land line I just get a unobtainable tone. Anybody know why this maybe?

Yeah.. that feature on your line has "fell off" the telephone switch.. just call VM on 151 (Select telco faults) and advise, they will call 2nd line support and re-add the free feature. HTH

Yep

When your number is auto withheld, as in you've already asked VM to permanantly withhold your number, you can dial 1470 to UN-withhold it.

You'd do this because some people, such as my mother, don't accept withheld numbers.

If you don't have it withheld permanatly, you can dial 141 before the number, to withhold for that call only.

Good post. Does the same hold true for mobile phones, or are the numbers different?

Re: EX Directory

No it's still 141 from a mobile, i'm not sure if you can ask the network to withhold your number though since you can do it from your handset in the settings, and i don't know if 1470 would over-ride that? But 141 definitely still works.

im aware of this and i was told that i would get both services for free when i agreed the new contract because i didnt want my ex partner getting my number as we are in dispute, and it was never put on my line meaning the number could have been found out and now im told i have to pay for it.
