Is everyone capped?

Hi everyone, new to the forum and just have a query.

I had been on 4meg connection for a while now and in the last day or so have been supposedly upgraded to 10meg.

Before the upgrade my download was capped at 500k and my upload was capped at 50k, is that normal? and if so why am i on 4meg connection when i am capped at half a meg?

After the update i have done a test, i am still capped at 600k download and 70k upload despite having my speed doubled...

Is this normal? Im paying for "up to" 10 meg now and yet i cant even download at 10% of that which seems shocking, am i doing something wrong or need to change some settings?

Or do you reccomend i use another ISP?

Im in south yorkshire if that means anything, we were on the arse end of the update list sadly

Re: Is everyone capped?

STM (virgins only pulicised cap) will drop upload to 80K and download to 1Mb on a 4Mb connection. Figures for 10M capped (STM) is 2.5Mb down and 128Kb up.

If you;re getting anything different inside or outside STM hours then it's either down to oversubscription on the UBR or incorrect modem power levels.

PLease post your modem up/down power levels, freqency and SNR ratios, also try telling us your up/down speeds at different times of the day

Re: Is everyone capped?

Have you rebooted the modem since the upgrade?

Been on 4Mbs in South Yorkshire. Your pre-upgrade speeds are entirely normal and pretty all right on a 4Mbs connection. My download rate rarely ever went that high although speed tests usually said 3.8Mbs. A lot of the ubrs round here are allegedly oversubscribed.

Since the upgrade I'm getting about 7Mbs on speed tests, haven't downloaded anything yet.

600k is more like 50% of what you could be able to get. You do mean kilabytes and not kilabits?

NTL/Virgin dont do a 4MB Broadband. They do a 4Mb (ie 500kb a sec max as you put it). So your not caped at 0.5 MB as thats what you pay for.

10Mb (after Upgrade) is 1.1MB a second. Not 10MB a second

Devide your connection by 8, and that should be your download speed. Or at least that's what I think.

So 4MB / 8 = 0.5MB...that's the maximum you'll download at.

I NEVER get higher than 460KB/s on my connection, and then around 80KB/s or lower after the limit has been imposed when I download over xxMB during the day.
