Wireless router problems
Hi there!
Any help on following issue much appreciated. Im not very technical when it comes to these things so i apologise in advance for keeping it simple!
I have a ntl:home 200 modem connected to a dell computer running windows xp. I also have a Toshiba satellite that i would like to connect to the internet wirelessly using a router. I have the router, a Wireless-G WGR614.
I have already attempted to set up the router countless times. Turn of computer, turn off modem, attatch ethernet between modem and WAN port on router, attatch original ethernet between computer and LAN port on router, power up modem and let settle, power up router and let settle, power up computer.
This is what i have found:
The enet light on the modem is not lit and the internet light on router is not lit and ofcourse no connection to the internet. Incidently when the ethernet is connected from the modem straight to the computer the enet light on modem does light up.
Please believe me when i say i know the cables have been connected up correctly, i have done this procedure over and over again.
Sorry if the solution is obvious but i have looked everywhere on the net for an answer and cant find the solution. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jo

Re: Wireless router problems
Hello Jo and welcome.
What do you know about the history of this router? Is it a new unit or second-hand for instance.
Are other lights showing on the router? ie.. is it getting power?

Re: Wireless router problems
Hi and thanks for your quick response.
The router is new, bought from Amazon only a few days ago. When i power on the router once its settled it shows the power light, the wireless light and the 1 port light (where i have put the ethernet cable to the computer) all are on so it is getting power.
Any other details needed just ask.

Re: Wireless router problems
Reading through your post again it appears that you are using the original (known good) etherenet cable between pc and router and the new one supplied with the router to connect to modem.
I'd suggest initially swapping the good cable to the router-modem link, just to rule out the new cable being faulty.

Re: Wireless router problems
Actually i did already try that to see if it was the cable that was the problem but unfortunately no. Sorry, i should have mentioned that in my original post.

Re: Wireless router problems
Ah well. I was hoping for an easy fix..
We know the cable modem is OK so the most likely candidate is the router end.
Have you tried different ports on there just in case one is broken?

Re: Wireless router problems
When connecting the cable from the computer to the lan on the router i tried both ports 1 and 4 with no success.
With the ethernet working on the modem when i attach it to the computer does this mean i can rule out the modem being the problem? Because ive read up on this particular modem and noticed some people having trouble with the ethernet connection on it. Its one of those supplied by virgin media (then ntl) and ive noticed they have brought out new ones since then. Could this be the issue?

Well i dont actually believe this but ive just tried a new tactic and for now it has actually worked!
I decided to see if the cables were all functioning so tried them between the computer and router with the cable in the wan port on the router. Each time both cables made the internet light on the router come on. Then with both modem and router ALREADY POWERED i switch the cable to go between modem and wan port on router and the internet light CAME ON!!! I then attached the other cable between computer and router and still ok. Then i powered on the computer and hey presto ive got the internet! Cant say im optimistic about it carrying on working but at least its a start!
Right now to try and get wireless to my laptop....
Thanks for all help. Will post again if i start struggling!

And i am now typing this from my laptop!
Thanks for all help received. It seems to have sorted itself out so despite not knowing how it got there, it got there!

Re: Wireless router problems
A result anyway. That's always good to hear.
Even if it's a bit of a mystery how you got there.
