Weird Internet Problem

Hello all,

Im wondering if you could help me solving this weird problem. When my white coaxil cable is connected directly into my modem my connection is absolute perfect but when i connect the coaxil cable into the isolator inside the white box that is on the wall and then i have to use another cable going back into the modem, i get a flashing sync light on my modem and a still enet light

Does anyone know why this is?

This started happening when i moved the white box which has the isolator inside to the opposite side of my room. Before i could get a connection using the isolator now i cant.

I went onto my modem and looked at the downstream and upstream data

When connected with the coaxil cable direct to the modem ( aka good connection):
Downstream
Upstream

When connected with isolator ( aka bad connection )
Downstream

Upstream

when you say isolator? what do you mean? [sorry if i seem thick lol] ? splitter maybe?

Did you move the white box yourself?

If you did it and not a virgin engineer, then you are not qualified to perform such an action and could potentially cause problems for your neighbours.

When you say you moved it to another wall did you use any new cabling to do this? Perhaps you have used the incorrect type of coaxial cable?

You might have a short circuit between the inner pin and outer if you put your own F-connectors on for instance? If you could explain further or put some photos on maybe we could advise what to do?

Thanks for your replys, but i find it hard to understand that me moving a little splitter inside a NTL box inside my own house how that could affect my neighbours?

Your connection is set by the engineer who checks the settings with his meter which you do not have, you by moving your connection by dismantling and moving your box to the other side of the room can potentially cause problems in the green cabinet if you are untrained and are just having a go.

It would have been better to purchase a long ethernet cable or a router than dismantle Virgin property.

You can actually be disconnected by Virgin for interfering with their property.

Oh dear, i never knew moving a small splitter inside my own house could effect my neighbours.

whydoineedatech would you mind eleberating on how this is going to affect other people? don't they have there own white box lol and how to hell is moving a white box going to affect the greenbox ?

I have a better idea ring Virgin and explain the problem to them, do not forget to mention that you did the work yourself, and they will tell you the same as above, and you will find other people on here will tell you the same.

Why do you think Virgin charge £75 to move your connection for you, because if it is not done correctly it can have a detrimental affect on your neighbours.

You can put LOL as many times as you want, but you have already caused problems to yourself by moving it or you would never have posted here.

Because the the box in your house is physically connected to equipment in the green box. The equipment in the green box is physically connected to equipment in other people's houses.

Problems could occur in the same way that if you plug a faulty electrical appliance in at home it could cause problems with other electrical appliances connected to the same circuit.

If they really wanted to stop people having a knock-on effect on their neighbours, they'd move it for free. More realistically, its £75, because thats what they can get away with charging a "captive audiance" for the service.

Just my opinion.

If you read the Terms and Conditions at this link, you will find that moving the equipment breaches them.

still don't get it just by moving something don't mean its gonna break? and if u haven't messed with it ie extnded cables or something why is it gonna fault?

Could I ask 'whydoineedatech' his opinion on this:
I have been having badly fluctuating UL speeds for the past week. My neighbour has been doing major house alterations for the past month, including plastering the living room. If he has moved his cable socket himself and buggered it up (for want of a better phrase), could this be the cause of my (and other ppl in the street who also have poor upload speeds) problems ?
What are the chances its something to do with the green box components ? (the upload speed goes from normal down to 6kbps or less constantly, then back up).
