TP-LINK WR541G and Virgin Media Cable
Hello,
I am trying to configure a TP-LINK WR541G wireless router on a Virgin Media cable broadband.
i have read this problem and read you have to turn virgin modem of for 10 min then turn on but on my router the wan light seems to be off when i power the modem on after off for 10 min my virgin cable modem is scientific atlanta webstar cable modem please can someone help please.
could someone help please as it has been a few months since i bought the router and cant get it connected.
but
Diagnostic:
1) When I connect the pc the the cable modem directly everything works perfectly.
2) When I connect the router to the modem and the pc to the router, the pc connects perfectly to the router setup menu but I cannot manage to get an internet connection. Using the Dynamic IP option, the router remains stuck on "obtaining network parameters..."
the above i can do its just that i cant get it connected with the wireless router number 2 is the problem
please any help is very thankfull and apreciated

Re: TP-LINK WR541G and Virgin Media Cable
1. Turn everything off.
2. Connect PC to Router via Ethernet
3. Connect Router to Modem using Ethernet
4. Turn Modem on
5. Wait 5 minutes
6. Turn Router on
7. Wait 5 minutes
8. Turn PC on
Does it work now?

Forgot to say:
One of the ethernet ports on the back of the router will be designated as the WAN port, make sure you plug the modem into that one and the PC into any other.

Re: TP-LINK WR541G and Virgin Media Cable
Rob M thanks for the reply
just tried what you said
1. Turn everything off.
2. Connect PC to Router via Ethernet
3. Connect Router to Modem using Ethernet
4. Turn Modem on
5. Wait 5 minutes
6. Turn Router on
7. Wait 5 minutes
8. Turn PC on
followed each step with no luck and i also made sure the modem ethernet is connected in the wan port.
but i have tried fiddling and have realised if i connect a cable to the pc and insert that into the wan port the wan light flashes.
but dosent work if i do it with the modem
is there something else i could try??
thanks any reply is much apreciated
oh jst to get extra detail im on windows xp really looking forward to having wireless internet for psp and ps3

Re: TP-LINK WR541G and Virgin Media Cable
Ok, the way I understand this, that WAN light comes on when there's a proper physical connection between the router and the device plugged into it.
The fact that it comes on when you plug the computer into it suggests that the light and the WAN connection on the router are working just fine, the fact that it doesn't come on when you plug the modem in suggests (to me at least) a problem with the modem not negotiating a connection with the router properly.
I'd wait a little while, we have some NTL techs on the board who may have some additional thoughts, but I think you're going to end up having to call faults.

The only modem that you'll be able to connect to the VM service (as far as I'm aware) is an officially supplied one from VM. If they agree to send one out to you then they should tell you what you need to do with it when it arrives.

Re: TP-LINK WR541G and Virgin Media Cable
I wouldn't have thought so, not if the old one proves to be faulty and it's one that they've supplied - best bet would be to give them a call.
You say that when you connect directly to the CM it works ok, is that connection USB or Ethernet? If it's Ethernet it seems strange that it works when connected to the PC but not when connected to the router. There may be something else going on here.....

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem.
Open a browser and in the address bar put> 192.168.100.1 password and username are both root if required.
DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER
