Quads

In search of savings on the spiralling cost of petrol Ive been exploring alternative commute options..

I was considering learning to ride a motorcycle as its something i've always fancied, while looking around I found a few places selling road legal quads.

Now the only experience I have of quad bikes is the farm type and the little chavs illegally ragging down my road on stolen kids ones.

You only need a car license to ride one and insurance is dirt cheap (although limited availability) for something like a 320cc you get 65mph and 200mpg (apparently)

The farm ones ive been on were very unstable and one of my group broke his collear bone within 30 seconds of getton on one, so does anyone have experience on road/sport quads?

Re: Quads

I was also thinking of throwing in the car keys and going back to a motorbike. A Quad sounds cool. Just make sure you lock it up!

Re: Quads

Need to keep my car as I have a dog and I travel with work quite a lot. My car is pretty much paid for by work so thats not an issue.

Security is definately a point for me, I dont have a garage and they aint small to get in the back garden. You can secure them to the ground but they are a nightmare round here.

Re: Quads

I would imagine for a Quad to be road legal it would have to have road tyres, brakes and suspension to match the speeds they are capable of, mind you just because you can do a speed, doesn't mean it's a good idea

Re: Quads

I've ridden a quad off road a few times, admittedly I am going back a few years, but I don't think I'd fancy riding one on the road in traffic, there just too unpredictable and very jumpy. On the other hand riding a motorcycle is totally different, luckily I took my motorcycle test in the days when the examiner stood on the corner of the road, and watched as you approached a junction, rode at walking speed and watched you do an emergency stop. I've got an old Kawasaki GPZ750 in the garage which comes out each summer, especially when I have to go up to London for the day, as regards insurance now I'm in my 40s, I'm paying around £250 a year, which is about the same as my car policy. I certainly wouldn't want the bike as my only transport, I well remember freezing winters when I was younger, but as an occasional bit of fun in the summer you can't beat it.

They are kitted for the road, lights, reverse, indicators, disc brakes and adjustable for suspension. Lots have wider axles to make stable.

Eg

Re: Quads

I'm also looking at getting a quad bike, with the price of fuel, road tax and all the other stuff that goes with running a car I think the time has come to look elsewhere for my transport needs.

I'm looking on Ebay for a quad, there's some good sites on there, I'm looking at getting This One. For the price you can't go wrong.
